Thermalright True Spirit 140? This cooler has long been present in the market. But in 2016 the manufacturer has released an updated edition of the popular model. True Spirit 140 Direct not only looks fresh, but also based on the principle of direct contact heat pipes with a CPU (Heatpipe Direct Touch, HDT).
Heat pipes are not integrated into the copper base of the cooler, and in direct contact with the processor. Of course, many believe HDT technology, mainly way to reduce costs. Indeed, most HDT coolers are focused on the lower price segment. But Thermalright recently showed that HDT cooler and cheaper – is not synonymous. First Thermalright cooler with HDT technology, namely Macho Direct, showed in our tests good results, and it is very affordable. True Spirit 140 Direct follows in the footsteps of said model.
Apart from the new principle of HDT, cooler True Sprit 140 Direct is similar to its predecessor, True Spirit 140 from 2011. We get a very narrow single-tower heatsink with a 14-cm fan PWM (PWM). The narrow design is intended to provide a good level of compatibility – here are just more powerful coolers Macho shown itself is not always good. Thermalright has decided to improve the appearance. Unlike the first True Spirit 140, nickel-plated heatpipes. A top edge of the radiator is painted black, a color fan.
Regular cooler True Spirit 140 has entered the market with a suggested price of 39.90 euros. New True Spirit 140 Direct boasts an even lower price: only 37,99 euro for Thermalright information.
Package includes well-known for other products Thermalright mounting accessories, multi-language user’s manual, a bag of thermal paste and four mountings for the fans. Besides the standard fan, you can install a second configuration push-pull. Unfortunately, Thermalright has refused reusable bags for accessories. After opening the accessories have to be stored in boxes or elsewhere, as re-seal the bags will not work.
If we compare the appearance of the original True Spirit 140 with the new model, the design seem more modern. The reason lies in the nickel-plated heat pipes and the upper edge of the radiator, painted of black. Dimensions True Spirit 140 Direct slightly decreased. From such a step should improve compatibility with cases as cooler height 16.1 cm less problematic than 17 cm above.
The radiator with a fan has a width of only 68.5 mm (original cooler: 80 mm). However, from such a narrow fan hardly makes sense to expect the cooling performance at the level of broad coolers Macho.
Thermalright not only decorate the top edge of the radiator, but also worked on other plates. Additional holes and punched Thermalright logo improve air circulation between the ribs.
The most important innovation is hidden in the base of the cooler. Five 6mm heatpipes flattened bottom and come in direct contact with the processor.
Complete fan has vibration isolation, so Thermalright has provided insulation on a radiator. To this end, four rubber bushings are inserted into the recesses of the radiator. And then the fan falls on said sleeve. Installing bushings should in any case, since the package stays mounts several millimeters between the radiator and fan. And without sleeves you will not get a reliable fastening.
Black TR-TY140 fan has a format of 140 mm, but it has mounting holes are the same as that of the standard 120 mm fan. Model with adjustable PWM running at speeds of 300 to 1,300 r / min, it is a reasonable range.
The installation process is identical to the other coolers Thermalright. On the Intel platform, focused on the mass market, you must first install the back plate using four screws and bushings. Then, on the front side of the motherboard is screwed mounting frame, and it is already screwed cross cooler. The above-mentioned rubber bushings must be installed on the heatsink from above and below. Therefore, it is better to establish, together with the fan to fan mounting system.
Narrow radiator True Spirit 140 Direct reserves sufficient distance to the graphics card and memory slots. Even with the fan set can be equipped with four memory slots modules with high heat spreaders.
Unlike many recently tested coolers, True Spirit 140 not equipped with Direct 120-mm fan, and a larger 140-mm model. Therefore, the fan is not only passes through a greater air flow, but also runs a bit louder at equal speeds. Subjectively, the fan noise level was quite low, characteristic was uniform, without any extraneous sounds. It is pleasant to note the wide range of adjustment of the fan. At 1,000 r / min the noise level is rather low, but it can be further reduced by reducing the rotational speed.
Thermalright has limited the maximum speed of 1,300 rev / min, so the True Spirit 140 Direct operating relatively quiet even at full speed.
The following test scenario, we evaluate the performance of the cooler with the standard fan at 1,000 rev / min and at maximum speed.
The relatively low top speed is good for noise reduction, but it is somewhat limited cooling capacity. On the other hand, True Spirit 140 Direct at full speed up the cooling performance of other narrow tower coolers. Here, the reason lies in the larger 140-mm fan. At 1,000 rev / min cooler gone to the top of our ranking, showing the performance level Enermax ETS-T50 AX and Cooler Master MasterAir Maker 8.
To compare “pure” performance coolers without affecting regular fans, we equip all our reference cooler fans. We used a powerful fan Noctua NF-A15 PWM, the distance between the mounting holes is 105 mm, speed – up to 1,200 rev / min. If such fans can set on the radiator was absent, we used a more compact Noctua NF-F12 at a speed of 120 mm to 1,500 rev / min. In the case of coolers, designed for “real” 140-mm fans with hole spacing of 140 mm, we used the NF-A14 PWM.
Thermalright cooler nominally equipped 140-mm fan with the distance between fixing holes 105 mm. Accordingly, we were able to establish the reference fan NF-A15 PWM.
At 1,000 rev / min and regular reference fans give comparable performance, position in the overall ranking also does not surprise us. A more interesting situation at 600 rev / min. Many models of competitors could hardly withstand the regime, but in the case of a new cooler Thermalright CPU temperature increased comparatively moderately.
Of course, the cooler True Spirit 140 Direct was no revolution. Before us is more than an evolutionary development of the popular model, which has undergone several re-editions. Thermalright has used the opportunity to introduce a number of improvements. Externally, the True Spirit 140 Direct has become much more interesting. Silver and black cooler will look better in modern systems than the original True Spirit 140. From late model new cooler features a fully black fan. Today, when more and more buildings are equipped with side windows, including glass, look cooler becomes more important.
It is not entirely clear how the transition to HDT technology has affected the performance of the cooler. We did not test the original True Spirit 140 at the current test setup. However, even with such data on hand to make a comparison is problematic, as the new model radiator size has been reduced. But such a step is possible to improve the compatibility of True Spirit 140 Direct from the computer. Although, of course, narrow radiator design limits the heat exchange area. But, as can be seen from the test results, the Thermalright cooler receives a smaller drop in cooling performance than some competing models narrow. We especially liked the situation at fan low speed, performance declined very moderately. Since the fan with adjustable PWM provides a wide range of speeds, you can hardly hear the True Spirit 140 Direct in everyday use.
The obvious alternative to the True Spirit 140 Direct are inexpensive models Macho, including previously tested cooler Macho Direct. As you can see the results of our tests, the larger model provides a higher level of cooling performance, but at the same time requires more space. For the price of both coolers are comparable, it is less than 40 euros in Europe.
Need a narrow tower cooler at an attractive price? In this case, the True Spirit 140 Direct worth paying attention to. The cooler is worthy of our awards Price / Quality.
