Thermalright True Spirit 140? This cooler has long been present in the market. But in 2016 the manufacturer has released an updated edition of the popular model. Unlike many recently tested coolers, True Spirit 140 not equipped with Direct 120-mm fan, and a larger 140-mm model. Subjectively, the fan noise level was quite low, characteristic was uniform, without any extraneous sounds. It is pleasant to note the wide range of adjustment of the fan. The following test scenario, we evaluate the performance of the cooler with the standard fan at 1,000 rev / min and at maximum speed.

The relatively low top speed is good for noise reduction, but it is somewhat limited cooling capacity. On the other hand, True Spirit 140 Direct at full speed up the cooling performance of other narrow tower coolers. Here, the reason lies in the larger 140-mm fan. Thermalright True Spirit 140 Direct: Tests with reference fan

To compare “pure” performance coolers without affecting regular fans, we equip all our reference cooler fans. We used a powerful fan Noctua NF-A15 PWM, the distance between the mounting holes is 105 mm, speed – up to 1,200 rev / min. If such fans can set on the radiator was absent, we used a more compact Noctua NF-F12 at a speed of 120 mm to 1,500 rev / min. In the case of coolers, designed for “real” 140-mm fans with hole spacing of 140 mm, we used the NF-A14 PWM.

At 1,000 rev / min and regular reference fans give comparable performance, position in the overall ranking also does not surprise us. A more interesting situation at 600 rev / min. Many models of competitors could hardly withstand the regime, but in the case of a new cooler Thermalright CPU temperature increased comparatively moderately.

Thermalright True Spirit 140 Direct: conclusion

Of course, the cooler True Spirit 140 Direct was no revolution. Before us is more than an evolutionary development of the popular model, which has undergone several re-editions. Thermalright has used the opportunity to introduce a number of improvements. Externally, the True Spirit 140 Direct has become much more interesting. Silver and black cooler will look better in modern systems than the original True Spirit 140. From late model new cooler features a fully black fan. Today, when more and more buildings are equipped with side windows, including glass, look cooler becomes more important.

It is not entirely clear how the transition to HDT technology has affected the performance of the cooler. We did not test the original True Spirit 140 at the current test setup. However, even with such data on hand to make a comparison is problematic, as the new model radiator size has been reduced. But such a step is possible to improve the compatibility of True Spirit 140 Direct from the computer. Although, of course, narrow radiator design limits the heat exchange area. But, as can be seen from the test results, the Thermalright cooler receives a smaller drop in cooling performance than some competing models narrow. We especially liked the situation at fan low speed, performance declined very moderately. Since the fan with adjustable PWM provides a wide range of speeds, you can hardly hear the True Spirit 140 Direct in everyday use.

The obvious alternative to the True Spirit 140 Direct are inexpensive models Macho, including previously tested cooler Macho Direct. As you can see the results of our tests, the larger model provides a higher level of cooling performance, but at the same time requires more space. For the price of both coolers are comparable, it is less than 40 euros in Europe.
