Cooling systems provide low noise and low GPU temperature. Today, however, many graphics cards with the air cooler fans stop in idle, working silently. But ITS still cool better. On the other hand, not all users are willing to pay a decent amount for a full water cooling system. With Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition and decided to combine the best of both worlds. Video card is equipped with a cooling system with a closed loop, and for cooling of the voltage regulators respond to the numerous aluminum fins and an additional fan. It will be interesting to see how the hybrid cooler will affect the noise level and cooling performance GeForce GTX 1080.

If you want your gaming system to work as quietly as possible, but not averse to enjoy the benefits of overclocking, in recent years the alternative to installing expensive cooling system is almost non-existent. Meanwhile, today, even high-end graphics card like the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 or AMD Radeon RX 480, turn off its fans in idle, so passively cooled and operate completely silently. But under load ITS only provides a low level of noise. As for cooling performance, here ITS still in the lead. On the other hand, self-installation of waterblock on the graphics card is often associated with excessive efforts and loss of warranty, and the budget will go solid. A considerable amount of cost and a graphics card with a preinstalled waterblock. For example, the recently tested GeForce GTX 1080 ArcticStorm costs about 850 euros. Compared to the cheapest cards, the fee is quite decent. In our test lab received a graphics card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition, which promises to give the best of both worlds.

The graphics card uses the cooling system with a closed loop that does not require maintenance. That is, the video card is not required to integrate to an existing path so that she already is equipped with heat exchanger, pump, reservoir and tubes in assembled condition. But ITS cools GPU only. For cooling components of the power subsystem and the parts of memory chips meets the air cooler. Thus, the Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition refers to hybrid solutions.

Chip NVIDIA GP104 is based on a new architecture Pascal. In the case of the GeForce GTX 1080 we get four clusters GPC (graphics processing clusters) and 20 streaming multiprocessors (streaming multiprocessors). Each multiprocessor contains two blocks of 64 stream processors (i.e. 128 in total). In the result the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 works with is 2,560 stream processors (20 x 128). Each multi-processor is connected to eight texture units, 160 TMU gives. Graphics processor GP104 has an area of about 314 mm2, which has 7.1 billion transistors. The chip is made for 16-nm FinFET process technology in factories TSMC. The connection memory is on a 256-bit bus. The memory controller consists of eight 32-bit blocks. Each 32-bit controller is connected to eight raster operations pipelines (ROP), that is, GeForce GTX 1080, and the graphics card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition, works with 64 ROP.

With clock frequencies NVIDIA chose the usual way. Founders Edition graphics card works with the base frequency 1.607 MHz, in Boost mode guaranteed frequency of at least 1.733 MHz. Inno3D for its hybrid models significantly raised clock frequency. Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition operates with base frequency of 1.759 MHz, but depending on temperature and load frequency guaranteed higher 1.898 MHz. In practice, our test sample was easily exceeds 2.0 GHz. Chips of GDDR5 memory manufacturer is also dispersed, albeit very moderately: from 2.500 to 2.600 MHz. However, such a step are not all manufacturers.

If you are interested in architecture Pascal, we encourage you to read our review of the reference version of the GeForce GTX 1080. In it we reviewed the architecture of Pascal, new 16 nm process technology FinFET and other details.

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 1080 Inno3D iChill Black Edition has a much higher frequency than the Founders Edition. We are one of the fastest models among the tested graphics cards GP104. View what to expect from the hybrid cooler 3D accelerator.

Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition

In addition to the GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition Inno3D company offers a large number of models, which differ not only cooling systems but also clock frequencies. Today’s card refers to the flagship models of the manufacturer on GP104. Here we should also mention the previously tested GeForce GTX 1080 iChill X3. Video card is equipped with a cooler with three fans and overclocked to comparable high frequencies. In addition, Inno3D offers a trimmed card with lower clock frequencies and, of course, the reference version of the NVIDIA Founders Edition.

Unlike the Founders Edition, Inno3D quite aggressively raised the clock frequency Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition. If the California manufacturer of the GPU for standard version and pointed 1.607 1.733 MHz, Inno3D has boosted the clock frequency and to 1.759 1.898 MHz, respectively. Manufacturer dispersed even 8 GB memory GDDR5X, although very moderately only 100 MHz. In the result, the capacity increased to 333,1 GB/s.

In practice, Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition features even higher clock frequency Boost due to the powerful cooling system. In all our tests, the card showed the level of 2.025 MHz. In games Anno 2205 and Hitman, we got even 2.037 MHz. Overall, we got quite a stable clock frequency. Most video cards with air cooling frequency change stronger.

As for temperatures, the hybrid cooler the job. The Founders Edition graphics card temperature reached 78 °C but with cooler Accelero Hybrid S we have obtained the temperature level of the GPU to 54 °C. Rather, in our tests the temperature was between 54 and 56 °C, depending on the game. Of course, the temperature is higher than that of cards with a water block integrated into a complete LC loop, for example, the previously tested GeForce GTX 1080 ArcticStorm. But conventional air coolers lead to higher temperatures.

Before we move on to a detailed review of the Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition, let me give you the specifications of the cooler, PCB, etc.

With a length of 266 mm graphics card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition is one of the shortest models GP104. Related model iChill X3 due to the cooler with three fans much longer. But remember that you will have to find a place to install a 120 mm heat exchanger into the housing. The best option is to mount the fan at the rear, because the length of the tube graphics limited. In addition, the performance of the cooling is further enhanced by 80-mm fan, although a complex system of heat pipes is not here. Additional power to the graphics card is supplied via 6 – and 8-pin PCI Express plugs.

In Europe the price of the Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition starts with 769 Euro. Which is about 100 euros more expensive top-end graphics card Inno3D with an air cooler.

Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition: Impressions

Graphics card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition is based on the combination of air and water cooler. The GPU is cooled by a water cooling system, but in the back of the video card is set to a normal air cooler, providing cooling of other components.

The rear fan has a diameter of 80 mm, under a plastic cover hides the waterblock cooling system.

Inno3D chose the Accelero Hybrid cooler from Arctic. His appearance was changed, it now attracts the attention of a black-and-red design, is also supported by stylish lighting.

Unlike many other air coolers, the manufacturer refused a complex system of heat pipes. Cooling components of the power subsystem provides the fan with aluminum fins.

The iChill logo on the side of the card is highlighted. Depending on the load on the GPU, the backlight will illuminate one of three colors.

Slot on the plug we get the same interfaces as on the Founders Edition. Namely three outputs DisplayPort, one HDMI and DVI.

Power to graphics card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition is supplied via 6 – and 8-pin additional power connectors PCI Express. In the case of Founders Edition power supplied through only one 8-pin socket. As a result, the graphics card could theoretically consume up to 300 watts. Inno3D indicated maximum power consumption at 230 W – 50 W above the Founders Edition.

Rear Inno3D has added a metal plate to improve the mechanical strength and cooling. There are two connectors for SLI configurations multi-GPU.

If you want to install Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition in the system, you will need additional space. Not only due to the fact that the dimensions of a 3D accelerator more than the average, but also because of the need of installation of the heat exchanger, SVO. 120mm radiator with a fan are best installed on the rear wall of the housing. However, the abundance of options because of the length of the tubes we receive.

As for the PCB, Inno3D installed the same printed circuit Board, as in the case of the GeForce GTX 1080 iChill X3. Of course, it differs from the standard version.

The power subsystem is based on seven phases.

They are cooled by a large heatsink with aluminum fins and an additional 80-mm fan.

On the front side of the PCB there is a aluminum plate that improves the cooling of other components such as memory chips GDDR5X. It also provides additional mechanical strength of the graphics card.

The video card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition not only has enhanced power system, but also supply more power. In addition to standard 8-pin socket manufacturer added a 6-pin.

Directly with the graphics processor contacts thick copper plate, which removes heat from the liquid. The waterblock is also integrated pump, which pumps the fluid through the tube to a 120mm heat exchanger. Heat is transferred from the fluid to the radiator and dissipated to the outside of the housing by the fan.

The cooling system is supplemented by a fan in the back of the video card – it is responsible for cooling of the power subsystem of the video card, and also provides a flow of air under a plastic cover.

Supplied with the graphics card Inno3D is very good. In addition to the guide to quick start buyer will receive a full version of Futuremark 3DMark packages and VRMark. So that you can immediately evaluate the performance of a new graphics card. Not without a sticker on the PC case. Of course, you will receive installation accessories heat exchanger in the housing. Except that would not hurt a power adapter.

Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition: Power Consumption, noise and temperature

Let’s move on to the assessment of noise, energy consumption and temperature.

Noise

Unlike many modern graphics cards, Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition in 2D mode does not work passively, that is, it can not be called quiet. Additional fan power subsystem turns off, but the 120 mm fan on the heat exchanger continues to rotate. But it works still pleasantly quiet. We got the noise level just to 36.4 dB(A), so that the graphics card is one of the most quiet models with air cooling. For comparison, the version of the Founders Edition of the GeForce GTX 1080 showed a substantially higher noise level of 39.2 dB(A).

Load

After running games, the fan in the back of the video card turns on and the fan on the heat exchanger begins to rotate at a high rpm. But the video still remains relatively quiet, the noise level barely exceed 40 dB(A). However, some graphics card partners of NVIDIA, the same EVGA Classified GeForce GTX 1080 or 1080 ZOTAC GeForce GTX AMP! Extreme Edition, it is still quieter.

Temperature is also quite low. Due to the active cooling in 2D mode the GPU temperature Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition is only 37 °C, which allows the graphics card to take place in the upper third of the ranking.

Test and review: Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition (C108B-3SDN-P6DNX) – graphics card with hybrid cooler

Temperature

The same applies to 3D mode. We got a chip temperature of only 54 °C., Only the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 ArcticStorm with a full waterblock was colder.

As for energy consumption, the card also shows their best side. Under normal office load Windows the energy consumption was 127,1 W together with the remaining components of the test system is a bit less than comparable graphics cards. The reason lies in the modern technologies of energy saving.

Power consumption (whole system)

Under load the graphics card Inno3D consumed a little more of the model Founders Edition from NVIDIA thanks to the factory overclocking. We got 361,2 333,1 vs W W – the difference is almost 30 watts. However, many other comparable graphics cards partners consume more.

After connecting a second monitor to graphics card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition power consumption increases slightly. It is unlikely you will notice the difference in the annual energy bill.

Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 Black Edition: Acceleration

Graphics card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition already works with a decent factory overclocking, but we decided to squeeze a higher clock frequency. Moreover, improved cooling system, allows to hope for good overclocking results. As usual, we put the bar Power Target to maximum, and then searched for the maximum clock frequency, preserving stable operation. As a result, we were able to force the video card to work at 2.138 MHz, which corresponds to an increase of 5.6% compared to a frequency of 2.025 MHz, which we got when the video card in normal mode. So the acceleration was very good. As for memory, we were able to overclock it at 91 MHz.

Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition: Conclusion

Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition is one of the fastest and quietest model, the manufacturer GP104. However, since the heat exchanger fan in 2D mode does not stop, unlike the fan on the graphics card completely noiseless model we have received. But the graphics card is in idle mode still worked with a noise level of only 37 dB(A), significantly quieter than the reference model Founders Edition from NVIDIA. In game mode the fan of the heat exchanger increased the revs, but was still pretty quiet, slightly exceeding the level of 40 dB(A). For temperature the results are excellent: under load it was between 54 and 56 °C. these results still unattainable for graphics cards with air cooling this class of price and performance. The exception is ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 ArcticStorm, which showed an even lower temperature, but it is equipped with a full waterblock, which is integrated into the existing ITS. Have Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition we still get a hybrid cooler which is a compromise between air and water cooling.

Low temperature allowed the video card to work at high clock frequencies. Inno3D staff exhibited a fairly high level of factory overclocking. If NVIDIA set the base frequency 1.607 MHz, in Boost mode minimum bar is 1.733 MHz, the flagship model of the Inno3D we receive 1.759 1.898 MHz and MHz, respectively. In practice, the frequency under load was increased to 2.025 MHz. Graphics card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition is one of the fastest models on the market, although some competitors provide comparable results. If you want to squeeze out even greater levels of performance, you should overclock the graphics card manually. In our tests we were able to get the GPU frequency of 2.14 GHz is that the memory overclock is not as good as some other models. But the result is still very worthy.

On the downside, in addition to a decent space in the building it is worth to mention the price. In Europe for graphics card Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition will have to pay 769 Euro, in Russia – from 54,2 thousand. Of course, such a price level is smaller than ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 ArcticStorm with the waterblock, but still much more expensive than the cheapest GTX 1080 models on the market (from 40 thousand rubles). The cooler is manufactured by Arctic and separately costs about 100 Euro, but one should add plastic cover and lighting system. So decide for yourself.

Advantages Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition:

  • A high level of performance
  • Runs relatively quietly
  • Good cooling performance
  • Good overclocking potential

Disadvantages Inno3D GeForce GTX 1080 iChill Black Edition:

  • The high price
  • Requires extra space in the case
