Do you remember ultrabook UX32VD? The summer of 2012 ASUS first introduced Zenbook, ultrabook and combining discrete graphics format. Five years later, the market went successor ASUS ZenBook UX410U / UX410UQ. Ultrabook can optionally be equipped with a discrete GPU NVIDIA. The buyer will receive the news the same strengths as that of the original model. But if I could repeat the success of ASUS UX32VD? This you will find out in our review.
Several years ago, the difference in a pair of letters led to significant differences. Ending A and VD indicate the use of an integrated or discrete GPU. Now the important letters A and Q. Only in the latter case, you will get a discrete NVIDIA graphics card. ASUS has announced two initial configuration without a discrete graphics card – ASUS ZenBook UX410U. We got a test laptop UX410UQ before the retail market, it will be priced at 1,199 euros in Europe.
It should be noted that in Germany the model name has been changed, UX410U was renamed UX3410U. The cause is unknown.
The case has become a significant cause of ZenBook success. With the first generation ASUS adhere to certain canons that allow us to determine the Ultrabook membership at a glance. On the one hand, this widespread use of aluminum. On the other hand, the concentric circles on the cover and a wedge-shaped profile of the notebook. All that we get from ASUS ZenBook UX410U.
With the dimensions 323.0 x 223.0 x 19.0 mm laptop weighs 1.3 kg, it occupies the same area as the heavier related 13-inch model. The outer shell is almost all made of aluminum, plastic display frame. The quality of workmanship and tactile sensations both materials left a positive impression, we found no irregular gaps or sharp edges. On the strength of criticism either. Even considerable efforts did not lead to bursting housing in the panel to rest the hands or the keyboard, the body is resistant to twisting deformation.
But the display cover is left quite a different impression. It is easy to succumb to curl, and hinges were not as stringent as we would like. Even a small laptop shaking led to the fact that the cover has changed its position.
As for design, we found no significant anomalies except for the characteristic wedge shape of the hull. If you look at the main body from above, it appears rounded, but the side of the wedge shape results in a sharper features. This design met in the past and in other notebook the ASUS, it looks stylish, but elegant. ASUS ZenBook UX410U is available in two colors Rose Gold and Quartz Gray, but, regardless of the version, no we do not get released decorations.
After loosening the 12 screws with a Phillips head and Torx, you can reach the motherboard. The user will receive access to SSD M.2 and the HDD, and the WLAN module. You can replace and memory. But 8 GB of the 16 GB soldered, so more than 24 GB can not be installed. After removing the bottom shell still pay attention to one detail: ASUS adheres to the design, familiar to us on UX32VD . That is, the aluminum body is superimposed on a plastic frame. Yet the first ZenBook consisted entirely of light alloy.
Regardless of the configuration is identical to the set of interfaces. The notebook offers four ports USB, audio jack and an HDMI output. If the slot and SD memory cards.
But USB interfaces differ. The two are USB 2.0, the two – USB 2.0 Gen 1, one Type A, the second – Type C. The latter also works as a video output DisplayPort.
Present and wireless WLAN 802.11ac-enabled module configuration 2×2 antennas and Bluetooth 4.2. Speakers ASUS has developed in conjunction with Harman / Kardon, which promises high quality audio, although these low frequencies should not be expected. Note and 720p web-camera. Also, there is also support for TPM 2.0, which is interesting for the professional segment.
ZenBook always good to show themselves on the input devices, especially the keyboard. ASUS has long understood how to make typing comfortable. From this perspective, we very surprised ZenBook 3 , the keyboard which was not so convincing. Fortunately, all is well in the case of ASUS ZenBook UX410U. Despite the slim body, we have a good move, and tactile feedback.
even long texts can be comfortable to type on the keyboard. Switching point palpable good move too good, so the keyboard does not leave the impression of “wood”. The benefits clearly marked keys note, good size (15 x 14 mm) and a uniform illumination which can be adjusted in four stages. Is that the Shift key on the left is too narrow.
Touchpad also leaves no room for criticism. With dimensions of 105 x 72 mm it is large enough, the finger slides over the surface of the well. The mouse buttons are integrated into the surface, the switching point and the course chosen well, there is separation of the optical keys. Unfortunately, the touchpad our test sample was too big gap at the bottom.
At one time UX32VD laptop has become less expensive alternative ZenBook UX31E, and later UX31A, but the CPU and GPU technologies were quite modern. Namely processor Core i7-3517U and video card GeForce GT 620M. Is that the drives had to make compromises in the budget only fit hybrid HDD.
In early 2017, everything looks a little different. Processor Core i7-7500U is also quite modern, but instead of the HDD installed SSD. Is that an optional graphics card GeForce 940MX does not create miracles. Although she has not fulfilled even a year – on derivative GM108 was presented in March 2016. Let us remind that the only options ASUS ZenBook UX410UQ equipped with a discrete graphics card. Also on the performance of the notebook affect the processor, memory, storage type.
We received the test configuration UX340UQ-GV077T, which is equipped with a processor Core i7-7500U, 16 GB RAM DDR4, one SSD 256 GB and one HDD to 1TB. Of course, there is also a discrete graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 940MX with 2 GB of DDR3 memory. As a result, ASUS ZenBook UX410U laptop provides more than enough performance for office applications. In a multithreaded Cinebench test, our test configuration is shown 3.8, or 351 points (Cinebench 11/15), in PCMark test – about 5.300 and 2.800 points (PCMark 7/8). The result can be called good, but the reason is not only in the processor Core i7-7500U with two physical cores (with support for Hyper-Threading) at a frequency of 2.7 to 3.5 GHz and a large memory capacity, but in the discrete graphics card. Without a discrete graphics card and CPU use one chip iGPU budget, which in the case of Intel processors are usually distributed in favor iGPU by CPU cores.
Furthermore, GeForce 940MX provides higher performance GPU. Just look at the results of 3DMark. In the run Cloud Gate discrete GPU showed 6.800 vs. 3.100 points, Fire Strike NVIDIA graphics test results provided 1,400 points against 300. The video card GeForce 940MX not only offloads the processor, but also provides a performance boost when compared to other notebooks of this category. However, ASUS ZenBook UX410U laptop still can not be called a computer game that can be seen not only on the results of the tests, but also on the technical specifications iGPU. The graphics core is equipped with a total of 384 stream processors, DDR3 memory (2 GB) connected on a 64-bit interface. Relatively high GPU frequency from 1.122 to 1.242 MHz can not compensate for such a meager hardware.
Drive Performance was quite high. At least, this applies to configuration with 256 GB SSD. Although ASUS missed a chance to set a fast SSD. By reading we got 497 MB / s, recording – 301 MB / s. Two years ago a similar SSD would have been in the lead, but today it is only sufficient for a position in the bottom third of the rankings. HDD proved predictably slower, we got 127 and 124 MB / s. If you need more bandwidth or more places, you have to buy more drives separately.
With a relatively high performance sooner or later will fall cooling issue. Almost all laptops tested compact 2-in-1 showed very high temperatures or included throttling. And slightly thicker body is unlikely to fundamentally improve the cooling system. It includes a regular fan that throws the hot air in the center of the display hinge, heat pipe transfers heat from both the CPU, and GeForce 940MX. Unusual design, we would not be called, in contrast to the same ZenBook 3 very interesting fan.
In any case, the temperatures were below the critical level. Under low load average temperature upper and lower surfaces of the main body was 23 ° C and 24 ° C. After a lengthy load average temperatures have increased to 32 and 36 ° C, the maximum temperature rose to 41 ° C – in the lower part of the body, near the exhaust vent. The processor and video card GeForce 940MX heated to 85 to 78 ° C, respectively, which is below the limit values, despite the TDP of 15 and 23 watts.
But I have to pay a price: the constantly running fan, even though most of the time it is not noticeable. In idle mode the noise level is only 32 dB (A), under full load, we get about 42 dB (A). Noise mostly low frequency, so it does not irritate. Although, of course, passive systems are totally silent, so they retain the advantage. Unfortunately, even under low load the fan sometimes builds up momentum for a few seconds.
The question remains throttling. Video card GeForce 940MX under full load almost does not change the frequency, remaining at a level of not less than 1.176 MHz, the frequency of Core i7-7500U temporarily reduced to 2.4 GHz. Recall that the base frequency of 2.7 GHz. The reason may be overheated, but also to limit power consumption. Yet CPU thermal packaging bag is 15 watts. It is possible that ASUS ZenBook UX410U processor resets the clock frequency so as not to go beyond the limitations of the heat pack.
If you believe that ASUS used a bigger enclosure for the installation of more capacious battery, then hasten to disappoint. Battery capacity is 48 Wh, although in this case we have a 14-inch laptop. Even Dell installed the battery 60 Wh in the XPS 13 with significantly smaller dimensions. We are therefore not surprised that the ultrabook ASUS ZenBook UX410U showed average runtimes.
At low loads, we simulated by the test Reader’s Test Battery Eater package, we were not able to get 10.5 hours. At full load (Classic) the battery life was two hours. In the test, PCMark 8 we got up to 3.5 hours. power consumption results confirmed the values obtained. In idle mode, the system consume less than 5 watts under full load – 58 watts from the power supply. It is for this reason that ASUS completes UX410UQ 65 Watt power supply. In related models of PD ASUS ZenBook UX410UA power is only about 45 watts.
In practice, the laptop will be able to sustain a full-time without access to a power outlet. The same applies, for example, at the University of the day. We conducted our tests with screen brightness of 120 cd / m², which is enough for a typical office environment, although still not enough for the street level dannoggo.
Laptop ASUS ZenBook UX410U equipped with 14-inch panel IPS Chi Mei production with a maximum brightness of 379 cd / m². Note Full-HD matte display coating, so you get a good readability even in bright environments. Is it on the street to use the ultrabook will not be so comfortable. But it is enough to change the situation, so that glare and reflections are not conspicuous.
The display performed well, and other characteristics. Backlight uniformity was almost 90%, so the difference with the naked eye to notice it will be difficult. Contrast Ratio 1,329: 1 refers to the upper third of the rankings, the color gamut 61 and 95% (Adobe RGB / sRGB) is also quite decent. Is that worth to criticize the color temperature of the white point, which amounted to 7,500 K on average. If you put next to the screen sheet of white paper, the difference is palpable. However, there is a solution – just install an optimized color profile.
There is a question about the resolution 1.920 x 1.080 pixels with a diagonal of 14 inches. In the past, the resulting pixel density of 157 ppi does not lead to any problems when surfing or running office applications. Is it when working with photographs does not prevent a more accurate color temperature.
With the ASUS Zenbook brand has succeeded. As a rule, Zenbook ultrabooks left a good impression, although sometimes there were also not very successful model – as the same Zenbook ultrabook 3. With new ASUS ZenBook UX410U has decided to rely on the strengths of the original lineup. No experiments, no inflated prices, but with thoughtful and practical equipment.
This last point is not very visible on our test configuration. 16 GB of RAM is unlikely to be able to load the majority of users, and about the layout of USB ports, you can argue long. But ASUS ZenBook UX410U provides a decent set of other functions: good display, a sufficient storage capacity, more than enough performance for office applications. And high-quality housing. If in the next two or three years, the amount of RAM and storage you feel inadequate, you can install more powerful options.
But not all as good as we would like. display hinge is too weak to always keep the cover in position. And the battery life could be longer.
Yet in terms of price / quality ASUS laptop we were pleasantly pleased. It can be called only one competitor – ASUS UX310U with 13-inch display. For the same price you get a slightly smaller screen and comparable features, as well as a little slimmer.
If you’re willing to put up with greater thickness, it can be noted from competitors HP Pavilion 14, although it gives a leaner set of interfaces, as well as less high-quality housing. Of course, if we assume the age of more than two years and a weight of 1.5 kg, the list of competitors will increase significantly.
With laptop ASUS ZenBook UX410U introduced the very model of balance, especially in view of a discrete graphics card. Laptop worthy ZenBook line.
