Test and review: ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA - laptop-transformer of the new generation

ASUS in the autumn of 2014 introduced a laptop Transformer Book Flip, who had introduced the idea to rotate the screen by 360 °. We conducted our tests, but due to some shortcomings have not been able to give our recommendations. Now in our lab did a new generation of transformer, already belonging to the Zenbook line. New ZenBook Flip remained faithful to the basic principle of rotation of the screen, but it provides higher quality and feature set. All the details you will find out in our review.

In our laboratory we received the most expensive configuration ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-C4019T (in color performance Gold C4021T), which is available from 899 euros. For 100 euros you can buy cheaper model C4018T (Gold C4020T), equipped with SSD smaller volume. Will there be other configuration options in the future – is unknown. ASUS has announced three options for processors (m7-6Y75 / m5-6Y54 / m3-6Y30) and three options SSD M.2 (128/256 / 512GB).

ASUS has decided not to experiment on the display. When a diagonal of 13.3 “, we get a typical price for a given resolution Full-HD and IPS panel production AU Optronics panel enables wide viewing angles and color reproduction quality, but have to live with bluish hues:. The average temperature is 7,400 K. Note that ASUS has also announced version of a laptop with a screen QHD + (3200×1800 pixels).

According to the brightness, too, have the potential to improve. We could not get above 317 cd / m², making it difficult to work with a laptop on the street due to glare and reflections. The uniformity of illumination of 87% is quite good, and the same goes for the contrast (1,380: 1). The touch panel display also showed good results, it is responsive to user actions.

Set the laptop interface above average. ZenBook Flip offers two ports USB 3.0, one USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type C and Micro-HDMI, and audio jack. There is also a card slot for SD and microSD memory, Wi-Fi 802.11ac module 2×2 antenna configuration, and support for both bands, as well as Bluetooth 4.1. The only thing missing Thunderbolt 3, which would provide a connection at high speed, and easy to be replaced by video output HDMI.

Speakers could also be better. ASUS has built two dynamics bottom of the notebook, they do not provide high-volume and do not cover the entire audible range. Distortions appear quite late, but they are clearly visible. Web-camera with a resolution of 720p is also not the best. In well-lit areas of quality sufficient for video chats, but when conditions deteriorate noise appears quickly.

Keyboard and touchpad look familiar. But compared with other models ZenBook here are a couple of differences.

The first relates to illumination. For some reason, ASUS has completely abandoned the keyboard backlight ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA. Of course, the lighting is interesting only when working in the dark, but a device with this light price is quite expected. Keyboard showed strong performance during the set. The main keys are standard size and well signed, good move, the switching point is probed. Is that the space seemed to us too lenient.

Located in the center of the touchpad has a sufficient size. The finger glides well on touch touchpad responds sensitively. Here we have the second unusual solution: ASUS has integrated a single button, and the distinction between right and left is carried out on the position of your finger. It’s nice that the two buttons are optically separated. Stroke button and switching point is almost perfect.

An important feature of the ASUS different families is the choice of materials. For the ASUS Zenbook lineup traditionally prefer aluminum, which we received in the case ZenBook Flip. Build quality is generally good, although the strength may be higher. In the touchpad body flex when pressing the middle forces, the lid hinges are not very elastic and easily at the slightest pressing.

But loops make it easy to turn the laptop into a tablet and vice versa. Display cover can be rotated at 360 °, are possible any intermediate position. However, the tablet scenario still prevents weight. With dimensions of 323,0 x 220,0 x 13,9 mm ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA laptop weighs about 1.3 kg.

Outwardly laptop at a glance can be attributed to the Zenbook line. the display lid is traditionally decorated with concentric circles, thanks to the wedge-shaped body looks thinner than it actually is. In general, the appearance of elegant, although to someone it will seem boring. ASUS did not forget about the functions. Interfaces are distributed behind the left and right panels, the left pane of the navigation buttons are located in the standby mode and volume.

ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA: Performance, battery life, the conclusion

Even with the body thickness of only 14 mm is not always have to make compromises. More recently, in our lab we visited Acer Switch Alpha 12, which combines passive cooling and the processor Core-i, except that the battery capacity was reduced. The ASUS, on the other hand, chose a more conventional processors Core m for a thin body.

In a test configuration ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-C4019T was installed a processor Core m3-6Y30, which belongs to the weakest model in the line m. The processor is based on two physical cores, have Hyper-Threading support, L3 cache is 4 Mbytes, clock speeds – between 0.9 and 2.2 GHz. TDP (TDP) is at the usual level of 4.5 W, a crystal is made on 14-nm process technology. The processor integrated graphics core HD Graphics 515 with frequencies from 350 to 850MHz. ASUS installed a laptop 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD with SATA interface 6 Gb / s. The maximum transmission speed of about 480 and 355 MB / s (read / write) indicates a low-cost solution.

With the “younger” processor count on a high level of performance is not necessary. In tests CPU Cinebench 11/15 Processor Core m3-6Y30 showed 2.29 and 161 points. It is the expected result when compared to other families of Core-m. Thanks to SSD in PCMark 7 test, we got a good result 4.100 points in the PCMark benchmark result 2.000-2.200 8 points in ZenBook Flip slightly worse than average. However, the performance is sufficient for Word, Excel, browser, watching movies and working with photos. But of demanding games is better to forget. At least, it is necessary to reduce the level of detail and resolution, as the results of 3DMark. We received the order of 24.400 points in the benchmark Ice Storm and 2,200 points in the Cloud Gate Pass.

Processor limits the expected clock speeds under load. Under stressful CPU load it worked approximately 400 MHz and the GPU – 300 MHz, which is even below Intel specifications. The reason is, on the one hand, a limited thermal processor package. On the other hand, ZenBook Flip temperature is maintained at a relatively low level.

CPU temperature 68 ° C lower than some other systems Core-m. With passive cooling no problem, the cabinet is not heated.

In idle at ZenBook Flip top and bottom of the housing temperature does not exceed 28 ° C, on average, it was -26 ° C. ASUS coped well with the heat dissipation under load, as shown by the case temperature: below and above the value we got to 38 and 40 ° C. The advantage over the same Dell Latitude 7370 was 7 and 10 ° C, while at the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S we have to reduce the temperature by 5 ° C higher.

The Flip ZenBook set relatively capacious battery at 54 Wh. The laptop is idle, the display brightness of 120 cd / m² consumes about 6 watts under load – 13 watts. So that this is a most effective one of the models on the market.

As a result, the battery life under different loads ranged from 5 to 13 hours. The first value we were somewhat surprised, given the limited performance of the processor. In any case, if other manufacturers equip the system core m batteries of small capacity, the ASUS has chosen a different path.

The same applies powerful charge (up to 45 W), whereby the charging time is about 1.5 hours.

ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA: Conclusion

Laptops with rotatable display 360 degrees now offered by many manufacturers. Therefore, additional measures are required in order to stand out among competitors. ASUS was able to give a number of benefits in the new model ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA. It may be noted a large battery capacity, the quality of materials and a good range of features. Moreover, no significant drawbacks. Of course, it would not prevent the backlight keyboard and a large display brightness. But in all areas of the laptop does not fall below the average.

But for the full recommendations still lacks a more balanced set of performance, battery life and price. If you need a laptop between 12 and 14 inches, with a display resolution no less Full-HD, 8 GB RAM and 256 GB of the SSD, like the Flip tested Zenbook, it would be cheaper to just Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 for 800 euros. But it is problematic to find in Russia. It provides a higher level of performance, but the equipment is worse. An alternative could be called ASUS Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 13 with a high-resolution display, but the battery life is poor.

In principle, the market has a large number of tablets with docking keyboard, but there is less hard to find. For 990 euros can buy recently tested Acer Switch Alpha 12 for Microsoft Surface Pro 4 asks 1,100 euros in Europe, in Russia the price is cheaper – from 58,990 rubles. But the version of the core m RAM and SSD less. Finally, the market will soon Huawei MateBook at a price of 1,200 euros, which is too expensive.

So if you’re choosing between a laptop and a tablet, and the first place for you are the battery life and modern interface, we recommend paying attention to the ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA with an excellent quality / price ratio.
