A series of Raven company SilverStone Technology characterizes as “the extreme case for the enthusiast”. Currently, it includes nine models, one of which, the SST-RV03, we were introduced three years ago.
About extreme hard to say — it is too vague a concept, but the RV03 is really very specific: in layout it resembles the usual case, put the back wall up, it has ports I / o of the motherboard and slots for expansion cards was on the top plane. However, access to the system Board was familiar with the left side, and now we got another model from the Raven — SilverStone RVX01 in which the developers used to not only rotate 90°, but the mirror reflection: the system Board when the Assembly is installed on the right.
“Right” case is not new: we recently considered, however, samples in which “mirroring” is combined with the turn, we still did not get.
Case SilverStone RVX01 declared as a “subclass Raven X” that probably should be taken as a clear hint of “to be continued” — we can expect the new models with a similar layout.
And while we are talking only about the options currently proposed four. They are all painted black, but have a bottom, front and top insets, color which you can choose: red (SST-RVX01BR-W), green (more light green, SST-RVX01BV-W) or blue (SST-RVX01BA-W). Readers familiar with the SilverStone system indexes, notice: if there is the letter ” W ” meaning “window” — a transparent window in the side wall (in this case, of course, not left and right), there may be no modification of this letter and, accordingly, no window.And it is really affordable, but until with only one finish option — red: SST-RVX01BR.
Packaging, as in other cases of the series, made of ordinary cardboard, which caused a rather abstract image of the front panel, as well as text explanations. More complete information is contained in the attached multilingual instructions, made in the form of plump little books of great textured paper. Here only it could be bigger, but the photos not so dark that would have a positive impact on intelligibility.

Of course, when you look at SilverStone RVX01 attention is drawn to items with a colored finish, especially the stand. Yes, it is a stand: separate legs from body no, their role is performed by the plastic design of complex shape, lift the chassis over the mounting surface. In the field of contact with such a surface has wide rubber stickers thickness of 3 mm, which should provide good shock absorbing capability.
A continuation of the stand is a plastic “kit”, but black, which adorn the lower part of the side and rear planes of the housing.
Another notable component is highlighted — top cap. It is made of black plastic, but it has several rows of large holes on the inside are covered with a metal mesh, colored in the same color as the stand.
Finally, the photographs in the official sources can see the colored insert in the form of strongly horizontally stretched letter “V” on the front panel, but in this instance it was clear Mat insert-light guide that when power is illuminated with two LEDs of amber color. The LEDs are mounted, is attached to the front wall of the chassis, and therefore do not interfere with the removal of the front panel.

Looking ahead, we note: in the case of SilverStone RVX01 the situation is exacerbated by the lack of a built-in fan controller.
In this regard, it is interesting to note that in the earlier case RV03 five inch slots with access to the front panel with a whopping seven…
The controls are located on the front edge of the upper panel. They are mounted on a separate bracket, mounted to the chassis and not connected mechanically with no front, no top covers. Its upper part forms a small niche, in which the external ports: on the edges, one USB 3.0, in the middle of a pair of audio jacks. Thus, two wide USB devices simultaneously connected, it is possible, but each of them may prevent access to the adjacent audio connector.
On the sides of the niche are buttons: Reset to the right, next to which there is an indicator of disk activity (also amber), Power on the left. The buttons are small and quite stiff, so accidentally pressing any of them will be unlikely, but the tactile sensation of a deliberate, if they aren’t the most pleasant.
The height of the housing is such that when the location of the table sitting next to a man without craning his neck and not half-rising, will be able to see the buttons only if its growth is above average. Located in a niche (albeit shallow) connectors, the situation is worse: from a sitting position they will only see a very tall person, everyone else will have to rise.
The upper surface of the chassis more resembles the rear wall of the housing of a conventional layout than what we’ve seen in the SST-RV03, and primarily because of the different location of the power supply. However, in SST-RVX01 could not affect “the mirror”: the orientation of the motherboard led to the location of the expansion slots closer to the front, in the middle is the slit under her ports I / o and fan grill servicing the area of CPU, and the rear window for the power supply.
Of course, from all possible external connectors will move the whole field of cables. To disguise it, just need a top cover, which has the shape of an inverted trough, a deep and extending to the rear edge of such extension is quite clear: the number of cables in this area will only increase.
These cables will come out the back, and the place of their release is decorated with a plastic socket with a large hole in which to thread the cables. Socket screws and snaps firmly attached to the rear of the chassis, and to her attaches the top cover.
At the rear, below the PSU, there is a double compartment for the disk drives. And the lower third of the chassis on the right is closed removable metal plate, which is used for fixing two of these drives to be placed not outside, but inside. Thus, the total number of installed HDD or SSD will not exceed four. And it cannot be extended — in the absence of 5 – inch and 3.5-inch slots with access to the front panel to use them for extra storage will not work.
But for host adapters and other expansion boards the scope is much broader: in any slot of the motherboard you can insert cards up to a length of 347 mm — that should be enough for almost any modern video card, even if the connector for additional power it is the end.
But here, too, is not without its pitfalls. Remember the plate covering the right lower portion of the opening in the chassis, that is the place where will be the additional power connectors of graphics cards. And if the card is not only long but high, the access to these connectors will at least inconvenient, and at worst case even impossible.
In addition, as mentioned above, this plate can be fastened from the inside two of the four drives, which will further impede access to the connectors, and some types of graphics cards or other expansion cards and does not allow to set. And then the maximum number of installed disks is reduced to three and then to two.
In addition, longer the graphics card still have to manage to get to the right place: in a half-empty case is of special difficulties does not cause, but if you are already of considerable size CPU cooler, drives, other expansion boards, all connected by wires and cables, will have to Tinker. However, to compact it clearly does not apply, but the manufacturer claims the smallest footprint among the ATX Raven. However, there is really no guile: required for the computer installation place is not limited to the area of its base, it is necessary to take into account the space for the plug-in connectors and the waste from these cables.And in this case facing the rear cables do not increase the depth of body is the above value takes into account the back ledge of the stand, the size of which readily admits the existence of the output cables and the housing can be moved close to the rear of the vertical surface.
However, most of the buildings minitower “classic” layout work, if not smaller, it is comparable to SilverStone RVX01, even if we consider the rear of the connectors and wires. But, first, not ATX, and secondly, not Raven, and the manufacturer is talking specifically about ATX Raven, so that will not carp.
When compared with the ATX (any, not just Raven), SilverStone RVX01 obviously will “be lightweight”, and then all the “weight pen” — it weighs only 5.4 kg. First of all it has affected a thin steel used in the design: the thickness of the various elements to which we were able to get a micrometer, is in the range of 0.55–0.65 mm. However, this does not greatly affected the overall stiffness of the chassis, as the size of the removable side wall is small, Yes, and the chassis is not very large — a considerable size of the case is largely due to the deep front and top plastic panels.
However, the stiffness of the individual elements I would like to have more. First of all talking about the substrate of the motherboard though and its very very flimsy not name: print the relief combined with a small number of holes do not allow it to bend from the slightest tap, despite the small thickness of the metal.
But, of course, a small weight due to other reasons: lack of racks for five inch drives and a small number of places for HDD/SSD, and other design features.
Equipment poor: besides the aforementioned, the booklets of the user, there is only a set of fasteners in one bag, including adapter for a Phillips screwdriver on the hex for installation of the racks on the system Board and two slides for the installation of disk drives into the Bay. No tweeters for the motherboard, or even the habitual disposable ties for cables.

As mentioned above, the regular fan controller in SilverStone RVX01 there is no possibility of installation of fan control, so to connect the fans have to either the motherboard or to the power supply using a separately purchased adapter.
The place of installation of the complete fan is equipped with a filter made of fine nylon mesh on a plastic frame. It can be removed without opening the case — his latch is on the back enough to pull it down and remove the filter. Everything seems to be easy, but the filter is very long, and if the computer is installed close to the wall, it is first necessary to push at least 40 centimeters.
All other filters do not have — apparently based on the fact that the lower fan will create positive pressure. Decorative mesh on the top panel can protect from dropping small items, and large lumps of dust, but when the power is off the dust to fall through it will be free.
An optional fan on the top panel obviously needs to be exhaust, so the filter for it and don’t need. But the front fan is more difficult: how to focus — it doesn’t say neither the official website nor in the manual. If you do escalate, then it is not even a loophole, and a wide trail of dust, and from this point of view it is better to do the exhaust, in contrast to similar ventilators in buildings of conventional layout. By the way: for the passage of air in the plastic front panel there are slots (quite narrow), and the cutout in the bottom of the (quite wide).
There is another place, ambiguous in terms of peleponnese: vents in the rear near the attachment of the power supply. If the PSU is mounted fan inside the case, there is no problem, but if the fan is “looking” outward, the filter will obviously play a negative role.
First remove the top cover: Unscrew the back two screws with knurled heads and slightly move the lid back, then lift her up. Side edges on the landing gear fixed by a system of projections and grooves, and the lower pressed against the decorative side plates. Fit is pretty solid, and for removing the wall sometimes you have to make the effort.
When returning these caps are in place, too, not everything runs smoothly: we need to make sure that all the tabs on the side edges was in the grooves, and this is due to the small rigidity of the walls does not always work the first time.
The front panel is secured by plastic latches and can be removed quite easily, and you can take the hand held by the lower end of the slot. As already mentioned, no wires or cables that prevent complete removal of this panel, no.
Before mounting the motherboard, you must first install in the right places hex stand from the kit. The cutout in the substrate will allow to operate certain types of CPU coolers without removing the Board, and the hole for its port I / o has no plugs, you will have to break down.
The cooler block on the CPU manufacturer recommends that you install so that the air flow from its fan facing upwards, that is coincided with the direction of flow from the regular case fan. The same is said in respect to graphics cards: select the model where the air comes out the “back to slot” refers to the slot of expansion slot, which in this case is at the top.
These slots are provided with disposable plugs that will have to break down. Drives in a double disc compartment mounted on the slide-tray, almost flat — stamped are the only guides of rectangular section that are engaged with the plastic rails inside the compartment. In addition, because of the small distances and to the rear wall bending the cable near to the wall of the drive will have to make near the edge connector, and besides, with a very small radius.
In SilverStone RVX01 not laid any cables for the substrate of the motherboard — in fact, in this configuration, do not like, and need, with one only exception: extending from the storage compartment, the cables are just more convenient it would be to pave over the substrate, and not to slip into the narrow gap between it and the vertical wall of the compartment.

We have tried to show this in pictures: a 2.5-inch drive is normal adjacent to the video card, but the 3.5 inch on this place simply would not fit — for example, we installed it on the second place.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to choose the view that fully displays extremely restricted access to the additional power connectors of the graphics card, as mentioned above. In the configuration displayed in the picture, the connectors started an inch and a half below the upper edge of the plate, and the distance from the edge connector to the plate was approximately 3 cm — you can imagine whether it is convenient in such circumstances to manipulate the connectors.
The connection of the front connectors is shielded with solid connectors (for audio there is only HD Audio).
The power supply is screwed to the top panel, any element in helping to guide it while installing or playing the role of shock absorbers is not provided. As already mentioned, it is possible to set the PSU fan inside the case or to the rear. It is possible that some types of CPU coolers with large dimensions set to the installation of power supply, difficult to install, and even make it impossible.
For the power supply along with the wires coming out of it inside the case is a space of 225 mm length.
The edge chassis is carefully seamed or filleted, and the risk of damage to the hands of the collector is minimal.

Case SilverStone RVX01 produces a mixed impression. Probably, lovers of unusual and innovative will be very happy with them: even a “mirror” of the body at which access to the components is done right, are rare, and as such “double shifter” is not only mirrored design, but also with the ports of the I / o of the motherboard and expansion cards on the upper plane hardly has or will have many analogues.
But from the point of view of practicality there are a lot of doubts. And it’s not even the lack of slots for devices with access to the front panel — this slowly need to get used with buildings having such slots will be less.
Available in SST-RVX01 four seats for drives is more than enough for the vast majority of office computers, and even for many home. However, installation of 3.5 inch drives into the Bay, especially near to the front panel is the place associated with the inconvenience of connecting cables and their placement on the right vertical plate can prevent the installation of modern graphics cards, so the actual number of drives this dimension can be reduced to two and even to one.This should be considered when choosing a HDD/SSD for the future of the computer, mainly focusing on 2.5-inch models.
Not everything went smoothly and the graphics cards, and not only in terms of “incompatibility” with the discs. High-performance video adapters are of considerable dimensions, and set them into the slot of the motherboard with the availability of the same plate not very convenient, especially if the graphics card is not one. For the same reason, connect the additional power connectors on these boards looks very sad.
But if all these difficulties in the Assembly is overcome, then we get the computer is quite compact (especially from the point of view of occupied area) the housing that can be moved close to the wall or the back wall of the niche.

Any serious claims to quality of manufacture and Assembly of the case have not found. Of course, used in the construction of the metal could be thicker, but it certainly would affect the price, which is hardly excessive for such an unusual case.
