Huawei introduced the new flagship Mate 9 in November 2016. Thanks to the Kirin 960 chip, it was supposed to become almost the most powerful Android smartphone, but it did not work out a bit. In February 2017, Huawei P10 Plus was introduced, which received similar parameters, but a smaller screen diagonal. The minimum cost of the device, actual at the time of the review, is $ 680 for the minor modification.
In addition to the top-end chipset Kirin, the device received a dual camera, some interesting design solutions, and a slim body. Taking into account not the most successful take-off of Mate 9, in particular, a little not justified iron, it becomes interesting whether minor flaws in Huawei P10 Plus are fixed. After all, from a smartphone for such a compromise money just do not want to. How good a smartphone is, whether it fits the price tag – will help you to know the review.
According to the specifications on paper to Huawei P10 Plus there are no complaints. Everything looks as good as Samsung or Apple. And here’s how it is in real life – let’s try to figure it out.
Huawei P10 Plus is made in a thin aluminum case, almost devoid of frames on the sides of the screen. The body is assembled well, the parts are fitted tightly. In versions of gold, silver and pink, a slightly matt coating of the back panel is used. The blue and green versions are distinguished by a special “diamond” honeycomb structure of the surface. The variant in a white color solution received a glossy coating on the back of the case.
Dimensions of the smartphone are 153 x 74 mm, thickness – 6.98 mm, and it weighs 165 grams. Mass can be described as typical for the phablet, but in terms of size, it is slightly less than the average. The front panel is made of tempered glass Gorilla Glass 5 with 2.5D effect. At the top there is a grid of speakers, a camera’s eye and low-visibility sensors. From the bottom there is a touch key with a fingerprint scanner, there is no more under the button display.
There are two rather unpleasant moments associated with the scanner. Firstly, it does not give a vibration response when you touch, which is not pleasant for everyone. Secondly, the screen does not have an oleophobic coating (which, as for the flagship, sounds a little wildly). Its absence is officially explained by the fact that the fingerprint scanner is located under the glass, and in the presence of an oleophobic layer it will work poorly.
The back panel Huawei P10 Plus is metal, on the bottom there is a plastic strip on the rib (like Meizu Pro 6 or iPhone 7). In the upper part there is a smooth insert, on which two lenses, a flash and the Leica logo are arranged in a row.
The lateral faces are rounded (without pronounced volume), on the left side there is a card slot. On the right there is a sound control rocker and a power button.
The bottom end contains a speaker, a USB Type-C port, a microphone and a headphone jack.
At the top there is an infrared port and a second microphone.
The presence of an infrared port is clearly a plus, as in smartphones (not including Xiaomi) it does not occur very often.
Huawei P10 Plus runs on the chipset of its own development Huawei – Kirin 960. It contains 8 cores, half of which are powerful Cortex A73 2.4 GHz. For light tasks, 4 Cortex A53 1.8 GHz cores are provided. The latest Mali G71 MP8 accelerator handles graphics processing. On paper, all this looks very dignified and impressive. Huawei even demonstrated slides on which the new chip works faster than competitors.
However, in the Mate 9 model, the result of AnTuTu was “only” 120 thousand, which is noticeably less than that of competitors in the face of Snapdragon 821 and Exynos 8890. In Huawei P10 Plus, the optimization of the chip is probably still paid attention. In AnTuTu smartphone is gaining about 145 thousand, which is already close to the indicators of rivals. As for everyday work, there is enough power here, more than. Everything works brightly, games start at the maximum settings.
Heating is present, but it is moderate. To the touch the case is not perceived frankly hot (degrees 45, no more).
The smartphone Huawei P10 Plus comes in versions with 4 and 6 GB of RAM. This is quite enough for running several programs and keeping them in the background of heavy applications. The built-in storage can be a capacity of 64 (freely 50), or 128 (available about 110) GB. The memory is very fast, about 300 MB / s when reading, 150 MB / s when writing, which is comparable with the performance of a budget SSD for a PC. However, some smartphones are equipped with faster memory and the first revisions could be purchased with memory, the speed of which reaches 750 Mb / s. Due to a shortage on production lines, P10 was later launched at a speed of 300 MB / s.Although this moment will not be meaningful for everyone.
The slot for the memory card is combined with the second SIM card slot. But with this capacity of the built-in storage, this defect can not be considered significant.
The battery capacity of Huawei P10 Plus is 3750 mAh. Indicators of autonomy of the smartphone can be called average, but no more.Playing video from the internal storage at maximum backlight brightness discharges the battery in 8-9 hours, games in 3-5 hours. And if everything is typical in games, then Samsung or Apple can play the flagship for a long time. In the mode of moderate use (with 2-3 hours of screen activity per day), you can count on 2 days, but no more.
Implemented support for fast charging, from 0 to 100% the battery is charged for about 1.5 hours.
Huawei P10 Plus is equipped with a dual camera. The main sensor is a color sensor with a f / 1.8 lens. The inscription on the back indicates the involvement of Leica in the development of optics. The second sensor is monochrome, with a resolution of 20 MP and the same optics. Also there is a hybrid phase-laser autofocus. Theoretically, such a set should provide good photosensitivity and detailing in poor light.
However, the miracle did not happen: the camera focuses quickly, removes well, but the same “Pixel” or Galaxy S7 slightly inferior. Cardinal differences on the background of last year’s P9 is not noticed.
The video is recorded in 4K resolution at a frequency of 30 FPS. When you lower the resolution to FullHD, it becomes available at twice the frame rate. Optical stabilization smooths the jittery picture. The sound is also written well.
The front camera Huawei P10 Plus is pleased that the manufacturer did not engage in the “invention of a bicycle” and installed the old good matrix Sony at 8 MP, with 1.4 μm pixels. This solution leads its history from the flagship cameras of past years and provides good quality photos.Improved to f / 1.9 light and autofocus, this only contributes.
The display smartphone is represented by an IPS matrix with a resolution of WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) and a diagonal of 5.5 inches. The screen is good, but not outstanding. It is very clear (540 PPI), with a large margin of maximum brightness. Although the contrast ratio in the sun is inferior to the Galaxy S7 edge and the iPhone 7. The display sensor supports 10 simultaneous touches and works quite clearly. Only the absence of oleophobic coating spoils the impression, because the surface of the screen quickly collects prints. In the latest revisions, an oleophobic coating is possible, so pay attention to this point.
The smartphone Huawei P10 Plus is equipped with a pair of SIM card slots in Nano format. The modem supports almost all popular communication standards, starting with GSM. The frequency range of LTE is rich, all Russian operators are supported. Bluetooth corresponds to version 4.2 and supports the “gentleman’s set” for sound transmission. Includes A2DP profile and LE specification version (which ensures communication in economical mode). Wi-Fi is designed to work at 2.4 and 5 GHz.
Of the additional communications, the smartphone is equipped with NFC, as well as an infrared emitter. The latter can be used to control household appliances. The navigation module can receive signals from GPS satellites, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS.Aluminum casing does not significantly affect the sensitivity of navigation systems.
The speaker of the smartphone, located at the bottom, is very loud. To hear a call in your pocket (if it does not happen in the metro train or the workshop of a machine-building plant), you can lower the volume to 70-80%. The sound is clean, with a good average range, but traditionally somewhat sluggish bass. In headphones, sound can be considered excellent, high-quality headphones with medium resistance, the smartphone shakes completely.
Nevertheless, it’s not for nothing that the manufacturer has equipped the flagship hardware platform with a decoder of 24 bits / 192 kHz. With it, listening to FLAC is really justified, to catch the difference with MP3 the thin ear is capable.
Huawei P10 Plus is based on the proprietary EMUI 5.1 operating system, in this case, a modification of Android 7. The organization of the curtain in it is not a pair of pure Android, and even MIUI or Touchviz. The space is used much more efficiently, up to 20 functions are rendered on the quick access panel (in MIUI there are 12 of them, and in the stock Nougat there are only 9). And the convenience of their call was not affected by the tight layout. Conveniently implemented and notifications (although here the differences are not so significant).
The system is running smoothly, without lags and friezes. The menu with the list of programs is not present, all on desktops, and such approach – business usual for Chineses. It’s easy to get used to the interface structure, there are no cardinal differences from MIUI or Flyme, everything is just as convenient.
The main (and unpleasant) feature of Huawei P10 Plus can be called a fingerprint scanner hidden under the front panel. Because of it, the manufacturer could not ensure the presence of an oleophobic coating. Probably, experiments with the introduction of a fingerprint sensor under the common glass can be a step to its integration directly under the screen. But I wanted engineers to train on models simpler, and not on one of the most expensive Chinese smartphones.
The fingerprint reader in Huawei P10 is one of the fastest and most reliable on the market.
Since the price of Huawei P10 Plus is clearly not Chinese, then it should be compared with the top flagships. After all, for a similar amount, you can take the Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge, which is slightly better in terms of camera and autonomy. Also an alternative are the iPhone 7 Plus, Google Pixel XL. But they lose in terms of memory (for such money only versions with 32 GB are available) and ergonomics (the sizes are much larger).
The review of the smartphone showed that Huawei P10 Plus is a worthy flagship device that can compete with brands not from China. Its overall level clearly demonstrates that Huawei has already grown to the rank of a grandiose mobile industry. The impression can be spoiled only by the absence of oleophobic sputtering on the glass, and the justification for such a decision does not sound very convincing. Of course, many prefer to immediately glue an additional protective glass on the screen, and for them this minus does not really matter. But some users of this dirty trick from the flagship smartphone clearly did not expect.
