Today, the Taiwanese company HTC introduced its flagship smartphone HTC U 11. The name, frankly, weird: as a rule, modern smartphones have more simple names- iPhone 7, Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6. The next gadget from HTC, in theory, should be HTC U 12? I wonder if version 13 will be missed? Again, “11” is here so that there is no intersection with U Play and U Ultra.
As far as I know, two things will be “forcing” in the company: Sense Companion – I talked about it in the review of HTC U Play, and a new original feature – Edge Sense. The last gizmo will be exclusively used on the device HTC U 11 and it is possible that Edge Sense will be installed on other gadgets of the company, and also, possibly, will appear among competitors from the supply of HTC in exchange for patents or other things.
What is Edge Sense? ES is a new type of thin-film high-sensitivity sensor with a very low delay, which is located on the side faces of the smartphone. Works on almost any surface: glass, cloth, metal. The sensor is able to recognize finger movements, multi-movements, short and long presses. In HTC U 11, it is useful for waking the phone, for scrolling WEB-pages (by swiping one of the faces), long pressing – activating the voice dialing, for capturing selfies, you can change the digital zoom in the camera. In the settings there is an item that allows you to manage Edge Sense.
Unfortunately, my acquaintance passed with a demonstration sample, on which almost all these functions did not work. The only thing I tried to do was take pictures: in camera mode, you just squeeze the right and left edges (the compression force is adjustable).
How much Edge Sense will be convenient at the moment is hard to say. However, most chips for only one model on the Android OS are rarely used. A simple example: the analog of the recognition of the force of pressing on the screen in Apple in Huawei, Meizu and other devices did not go to the masses, because programmers do not want to write applications for some specific phone models on Android. In the same Huawei P9 Plus, this function was, but in P10 Plus it was disabled: there are no applications, and nobody really needed it. Another example with the edge on Samsung smartphones – also very few people “yuzaet” this function. And about Bixby, I generally keep quiet: almost every second either wants to remove the button from the edge, or reassign to something else. Another thing is the mechanism of Taptic Engine and 3D Touch on Apple iPhone.
Actually, what am I for. To the fact that Edge Sense thing is interesting, but whether it will support third-party “writers” of programs (not from the HTC team) – is unclear.
PS It should be noted that I got acquainted with the unofficial sample HTC U 11, some moments can change. In addition, it was impossible to photograph the device, so the pictures had to be taken online, since they corresponded to reality.
The smartphone is almost a complete copy of the symbiosis of HTC U Ultra and U Play. That is, the plus-minus is the same shape of the case, only the lateral faces are more sloping, like on the Samsung Galaxy S8, the camera rim is a little more careful (it is smaller and slightly protrudes above the case), the front panel is flat, but has a sharp transition to the sidewalls.
Front and back will be Corning Gorilla Glass 5 (no sapphire version) with a different depth (in the case of the rear panel), the metal frame. As far as I know, the colors of the case are somewhat (like 5 – white, black, red, blue and blue), but as it often happens, at first there will appear only some three main ones. The color depth is very pleasant.
Slightly upsetting the thickness of HTC – about 9 mm (in the official source still say about 7.9 mm, we will clarify), the frames are also not the thinnest: by the senses, not less than 4 mm. However, the company says that they are not chasing the miniaturization of their smartphones.
In the hand, the gadget is not bad, but it would be thinner and lighter.
The arrangement of the elements is the same as that of the HTC U Ultra, including for some reason the fingerprint scanner downwardly scrolled down. HTC U 11 will not have a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, instead of it now USB-C with USB 3.1 support.
Of the pleasant addition – protection of the device according to the IP67 standard: it is not afraid of dust and moisture (short-term immersion to a depth of 1 meter). I note that the main competitors have IP68 protection. A trifle, but it is worth paying attention.
Sim card two, both nano. Slot for them combined – either two SIM cards, or one SIM card and memory card.
The screen diagonal is 5.5 inches, the resolution is WQHD (2560×1440), the IPS matrix with the marketing name SuperLCD 5. As you understand, HTC did not begin to experiment with the aspect ratio. Most likely, the screen is exactly the same as in HTC U Ultra (its quality). Functions such as Always On Display are not here.
I do not know what evil genius is pursued by HTC, but he again installed a 3000 mAh battery. I will not comment on the time of work, maybe the miraculous way will save the situation with the energy-efficient processor Snapdragon 835. However, by experience I can say that a bunch of IPS matrix QHD, almost any powerful processor and 3000 mAh battery gives at best 3.5 hours of glow of the screen – From the strength of the day is not the most “heavy” exploitation.
The manufacturer claims that HTC U 11 plays video 35% longer than HTC 10, and browsing – 43%. Support for QuckCharge version 3.0.
The main camera is 12MP Ultra Pixel 3 (module different from the module in HTC U Ultra, probably – IMX362), pixel size 1.4 micron, aperture f = 1.7, 26 mm, two-tone flash. Support of phase focus, the presence of optical stabilization. On the test sample, I did not see IR illumination. The presentation said that the device received 90 points from DXOMARK! That is, the camera has become better from all mobile cameras according to the site version (89 from Google Pixel, 88 from HTC 10 and Samsung S8).
The front camera is 16 MP (probably IMX351), the aperture is f = 2.0, 26 mm. The flash is realized by the glow of the screen.
HDR mode now works in the background, so as not to waste time on the assembly of pictures. The video can record 1080p with 120 frames.
As for the quality of the images, it is too early to say. You know, as it happens almost always from all manufacturers: at first the software curve, then its partial “finished” for months, maybe in a year’s firmware we’ll get what should have been at the start 🙂
The smartphone records HiRes audio, USonic technology is present (as in the U-series). The developers claim that a powerful speaker will be installed in HTC U 11 (there are only two of them – colloquial as HF, main as bass) of a new design with high and low frequencies.
Smartphone HTC U 11 will work on a chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, that is, the newest processor. RAM is either 4 GB LPDDR4, or 6 GB LPDDR4, built-in memory 64/128 GB UFS.
There is LTE CAT 16 with 4CA and 256QAM, VoLTE and VoWi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi b / g / n / ac (Dual Band) 2×2 MIMO, NFC, GPS / Glonass / Baidou.
The flagship smartphone HTC U 11 is quite good in terms of the technical component: here you have a top-end processor, and 6 GB of RAM, and a camera with optical stabilization, and a high screen resolution, and LTE CAT 16 networks and so on.
From the point of design, to my subjective view and to put it mildly, to an amateur. As you can see, HTC U 11 has no curved screens, no dual camera, no additional display – a classic smartphone.
