The Qualcomm company creates not only mobile single-crystal platforms of Snapdragon, but also mass of other semiconductor products. Among them there are also server processors on architecture of ARM, the latest of which is Qualcomm Centriq 2400 provided still at the end of last year.
But as is well-known, soon only the fairy tale affects, and only yesterday Qualcomm opened characteristics of the processor which will begin to be delivered until the end of this year, ComputerBase reports.
As it was told during the last year’s presentation, the Centriq 2400 processor will be issued on 10-nanometer technological process of FinFET in package like LGA. He will offer users up to 48 computing kernels of Falkor developed by Qualcomm on the basis of architecture of ARMv8. These kernels will work with frequency from 2 GHz and above. They will be added by 12 MB of the cache memory of the second level, and the volume of a cache of the third level will be 60 MB.
Kernels in Centriq 2400 are broken on couples, it is the share of each of which on 512 Kbytes of the general cache of the second level. L3 cache traditionally general for all kernels. In addition to Falkor kernels the new processor of Qualcomm received the six-channel controller of memory DDR4-2666 which each channel supports connection to 128 Gbytes of a random access memory that in the amount allows to connect up to 768 Gbytes of memory to the processor.
Still the novelty possesses the built-in PCI Express controller with 32 lines, supports connection to eight devices with the SATA 3.0 interface, and has two gigabit network controllers. The general throughput of the external bus reaches 256 Gbytes / page It seems that for tasks on which server ARM processors are oriented, it shall be quite enough.
It is claimed that Centriq 2400 in a number of tasks can successfully resist to the most efficient server Intel processors of the Xeon Platinum family, but at the same time possessing much lower energy consumption.
The Taiwan contract vendor of TSMC is responsible for production Qualcomm Centriq 2400. Samples of new chips for several months are tested by partners of Qualcomm, and they work both with systems on the basis of Linux, and on Windows Server 2016 which Microsoft offers also for ARM servers now.
