Nanoxia Project S Test and review: premium HTPC case in drawer format

Typically, case reach HTPC hardware easy. But case Nanoxia Project S is different – it pushed forward like a drawer. Through ATX chassis sophisticated design allows you to bypass restrictions and other typical HTPC enclosures. Inside, for example, you can install a powerful graphics card. Finally, Nanoxia Project S case looks stylish and beautiful.

Nanoxia known for its quiet buildings in line Silence of Deep , who really pleasing low noise level, but look quite modest. In line CoolForce case are more interesting design, but they are focused on the mass market. Previously, it was not beautiful Nanoxia premium buildings, but now things can change.

In this role perfectly suited Nanoxia Project S. Case demonstrated at Nanoxia booth at Computex 2016 where it attracted much attention. By the end of the year a stylish HTPC chassis is now available for purchase – at least in the European market. First came a silver version , is now added to it black. Case Nanoxia Project S is very interesting. In fact, we have a very large model in HTPC Desktop format with dimensions of 490 x 250 x 460 mm (W x H x D). Due to a similar volume of customers you can not worry about component selection restrictions. There is an alternative: Nanoxia Project S can be installed vertically as a Midi Tower, if you want to create from it a gaming computer. Since the body belongs to the premium category, it was not without its aluminum and tempered glass. Finally, the motherboard tray can be pulled out as a locker, and even during system operation.

In the case market, it is available in all-black color scheme and in a variant with a silver front panel. Case Nanoxia Project S appeared in Europe at a price of 232 euros , so that in front of us is the most expensive model Nanoxia.  However, compared to other premium models of buildings price it seems quite reasonable. You can watch a video of unpacking and the first acquaintance with the case in which we have demonstrated the functionality of “drawer”.

Nanoxia added to the supplied user manual and the usual mounting accessories. Also, the buyer will receive two sets of self-adhesive rubber feet (for the body and for the power supply), tightening the cable and the plug-slot for cable. Also included extension cable and EPS, it is not shown in the picture.

Nanoxia Project S: Exterior view

Nanoxia Project S is based on a steel frame. However, the front panel is used matt brushed aluminum.

Translucent strip – not just an element of decoration, for her hidden RGB LED. On the right input / output ports and buttons that are readily available in both the horizontal and vertical orientation of the case. Buttons power and reset are quite large, which is not the tiny button LED color change. Interfaces quite modern, Nanoxia installed on Nanoxia Project S not only two USB 3.0 ports and a 3.5mm audio jack, but also port USB 3.1 Type C. This interface connects to the motherboard corresponding port on the I / O panel, supplied It includes a long enough cable.

Side swept a simple steel frame, which is attached to the aluminum front panel. In the compact HTPC enclosure it is usually very little anchorages for the fans, and they tend to be of small size. In Nanoxia Project S is different. two 120- or 140 mm fans can be installed behind the front panel. On the left panel are installed two 120-mm fans (if you refuse storage rack). A separate group of vent holes designed for ATX power supply.

On the right panel of the case can be seen more vents. For them it is possible to install up to three 120-mm fans.

The only pre-fan located on the rear wall. Namely 120mm model from Nanoxia CoolForce line. The layout of the components on the rear wall is quite typical of the Midi Tower case, even if positioned horizontally. As can be seen, seven slots for expansion cards between the power supply and the panel of the motherboard I / O. Complete with an opening slot plug is needed for laying out the USB 3.1 cable. If you look closely, on the back you can see the four thumbscrews. They are not intended to fasten the side panels (or lid and the bottom in a horizontal orientation), and to lock the drawer. Only after unscrewing the four screws of the motherboard tray can be pulled forward.

We have repeatedly pointed out that Nanoxia Project S can be used as a normal Midi Tower case. In this orientation, the case looks very different, and it takes up much less space. Supplied with self-adhesive feet, so you can install them in any mode.

Nanoxia Project S: Interior

The glass panel of the case is attached with four screws with flat knurled head, below the glass rests on the rubber strip. Unscrew the screws are quite time-consuming – is difficult to catch the fingers, and a screwdriver blade can knock over cover screws. Furthermore, the rubber adheres to the glass strips. We had to force them to take off from the glass, which is required to handle very carefully. The interior of the case is quite typical for the modern Midi Tower. Of special features include three mounts for 2.5 “drives.

The power supply unit is screwed to the rear through a mask foam. If you stick to the power supply small rubber feet, it will not come into contact with the metal case. Expansion cards are fastened outside the case by conventional cross head screws.

In Nanoxia Project S have two options of fastening drives. As we already mentioned, inside there are three separate mounts for 2.5 “hard drives or the SSD. The drives them simply bolted, and the cables are laid for the motherboard tray. Attaching themselves also can be removed, it is sufficient to unscrew a few screws. Between the front panel and 2 5 “mounts space is about 8.5 cm, so the body can be installed a heat exchanger front NWO (240 or 280 mm). As indicated Nanoxia, installation may require long heat exchangers remove HDD rack at the left wall of the case (or at the bottom in the vertical orientation). In the rack, you can install two 2.5 “or 3.5” drive. Regardless of the format, HDD / SSD simply screwed to the rack. For 3.5 “hard drive vibration isolation is provided in the form of rubber rings.

The right panel (or cover) the case is suitable for installation of three 120-mm fans and a 360 mm radiator CBO. But the place is not much, so some 360-mm heat exchangers may not fit. Officially Nanoxia indicates the ability to install only 240 mm radiator. Between the wall of the case and the end of the motherboard is about 6 cm of space. Here, tolerance is not as significant as in front of the heat exchanger, but at least fit enough thin radiators or heat exchangers of conventional CBO closed loop.

Body design in the form of a drawer for easy installation in Nanoxia Project S fans and heat exchangers. It is enough to loosen the screws on the rear panel, and then the motherboard tray with mountings can be pulled forward. “Box” uses rails and wheels. Moreover, under the box also added wheels, thanks to which the box can even push out of the case. In general, this approach is much easier to work with the case. But we should be careful not to damage the cables.

Without drawer from the body leaving only the steel wall. The manufacturer added a three-dust filter with magnetic mounts on both sides and on the rear panel. They can be easily removed for cleaning.

If not for the wheels (two of which are equipped with brakes), the bottom of the “box” would have looked like a regular motherboard tray. For cable routing holes provided with plugs and loop fastening. All very thoughtful.

Of course, any Midi Tower chassis can be put to one side, and then comfortably install the components on top. In any case, with a large “box” Nanoxia Project S work very convenient. cabling system we like – at least if you use standard size motherboards. Unlike many buildings, power supply is not hidden. Also Nanoxia in many places refused bezotvertochnoy assembly, therefore it is necessary to fasten the screws ordinary screwdriver.

To our readers better understand the intensity of the LED-strip, we photographed Nanoxia Project S in the dark. LEDs are bright enough so you can use the body to illuminate the surroundings. You can choose different colors: red, orange, yellow, green, purple, blue, pink and white. The power button is lit in the same color as the strip. Highlighting only static, without any effects. If the backlight is tired, it can be turned off.

Of course, the body must not only be functional and easy to assemble. It should also provide efficient cooling.

Temperature measurements:

For measurement of the maximum temperature of the CPU test, we used the free tool Prime95, which loads the system for 30 minutes. We chose the Small FFT load that maximizes heat dissipation, and then fixed the maximum core temperature using the system utility Lavalys Everest. We have combined temperature for the individual nuclei, and then divided them by the number of cores. At the same time we loaded the graphics card a demanding test Furmark.

Temperature evaluation mode in idle mode (single operation of the system) is not so interesting, because processors and graphics cards manufacturers have long implemented a very good power-saving mechanisms. For example, reduce the CPU core voltage and frequency in the event of inaction. Therefore, the heat generation components is significantly reduced.

Temperature Rating:

They want to have Nanoxia Project S Corps are a few fans mounts, Nanoxia nominally established only one 120-mm fan on the rear panel. What appropriately reflected in the cooling performance – it can be called unless sufficient. The card heats up. The cooler the CPU, on the other hand, benefits from a nearby exhaust fan.

Evaluation of noise:

To measure the noise level, we used the Sound meter Voltcraft SL-400, which is located at a distance of 20 cm from the front of the case.

Other measures in review:

We measured a maximum height of CPU cooler, and the maximum length of a video card with a tape, as well as the distance between the motherboard tray and the side panel. To measure the thickness of the walls we used a micrometer. We also take into account the data published by the manufacturer. Of course, at the same time we made a certain measurement error. For this reason, we recommend that you consider the values given below for comparison purposes only, and do not take them as the ultimate truth.

With Nanoxia Project S body tried to invent something new. Indeed, the new ATX model is very different from all previously released Nanoxia buildings. And with the products of other vendors is difficult to compare directly. The new building can be used to build HTPC or gaming system, it can be mounted horizontally or vertically. Thanks to the concept of “drawer” in the Midi Tower case convenient to install components or replace them.

In practice, the “drawer” considerably facilitates the installation of components. The box is conveniently pulled out of the body, then you can easily install / replace the fans and heat exchangers, as well as to clean the dust filter. Finally, the “box” can be removed completely due to the castors the bottom, then use the system in an open testbed. While retracting the drawer back into the case will not be easy, we have to precisely align the rails. Nanoxia well chosen mixture of materials. The frame is made from robust and durable steel front panel – a noble aluminum. Finally, the case is closed tempered glass lid. The thickness of decent materials, production quality is high, but the body weighs a lot.

Optional components are practically no restrictions. You can set long ATX power supply, high-end video cards and most tower coolers. As for storage, some users lack an optical drive bay may not like. But the number of HDD / SSD mounts quite sufficient for most scenarios. Staffing in the case preinstalled only one 120-mm fan on the rear panel, the cooling performance can be called sufficient. If necessary, you can enhance the cooling due to the large number of fan mounts, and can be installed and heat exchangers CBO. As a result of the case Nanoxia Project S can be used not only for HTPC build, but also for a full gaming PC.

Nanoxia tried to make Nanoxia Project S as a more versatile as possible, but this is the weakness of the body. If you look at most of the buildings on the HTPC market, they stand very compact dimensions. And Nanoxia Project S rather big sizes. The case is unlikely to fit in the compartment rack Hi-Fi. The body itself takes a lot of space, and if you want to demonstrate the “hardware” of the glass cover, you have to find an open space. Nanoxia case and can be installed vertically, but the market has a large number of competitors in a similar or even lower price. It may be mentioned that the same universal case be quiet! Dark Base Pro 900 and Corsair Glass Crystal Series 570X RGB. However, we can recommend and stylish aluminum enclosure, such as of Lian of Li the PC-J60 . However, none of these models can not simultaneously be used as a Midi Tower, horizontal HTPC enclosure and an outdoor test stand.

Nanoxia Project S – a very interesting chassis with its tricks. For the innovative concept we award him the prize “new idea”.

Advantages Nanoxia Project S:

  • It can be used in both horizontal and vertical orientations
  • Easy concept drawer, can be transformed into an outdoor test stand, if necessary
  • Sufficient space for tall tower coolers and long graphics cards, flexible interior configuration with good cooling capabilities
  • Steel frame, complete with aluminum front panel and glass lid, bright RGB-lights
  • Removable dust filter
  • Enough space for cabling

Disadvantages Nanoxia Project S:

  • For HTPC enclosure is very large and heavy
  • Staffing is only one fan, so the cooling performance is not so high
  • The drives and expansion cards have to be installed with a screwdriver
