Dell U2417HWi Review wireless Full HD monitor

To surprise the modern consumer is quite difficult, especially when it comes to liquid crystal displays. Difficult, but possible. For example, Dell offers to connect the new monitor Dell U2417HWi without cables — by using Intel Wireless Display (WiDi). Find out what happened.

Wireless transmission of video signals – topic started by Intel back in 2010. In fact, this alternative is limited by the capabilities of the DLNA standard. For 2012-2013, the bandwidth WiDi increased to Full HD 1080p at 60 frames per second, and also introduced support for third-party Miracast standard. However, by the end of 2015, Intel announced the termination of development and application Intel WiDi Intel Pro WiDi as improved Miracast standard was native to maintained operating systems Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

However, such changes in no way impact on the technology itself. At the moment it supports signal transmission at resolutions up to 4K, but the hardware requirements have increased. And if for TVs and projectors wireless signal transmission is not new, then monitors it until mid-2016, almost never met.

Today we look at the middle model in the new line of Dell monitors that support WiDi – 23.8 inch Dell U2417HWi with IPS matrix Full HD. This is a very affordable solution intended for users who are tired of wires.

Dell U2417HWi: Specifications

The novelty is part of a series U2417, which presents as many as four versions. The available – U2417HJ – copy of our Dell U2417HWi, but without support WiDi and with a different set of ports for the connection. “Popular” version of U2417H – modification to the minimum size of the inner frames, different colors and other shaped Central bar. Model with the letters HA at the end – a copy of the previous one, but with a special VESA bracket affixed to the tabletop. Interestingly, the pattern used in the matrix is also slightly different.

The hero of the review Dell U2417HWi based on PLS-matrix LTM238HL01 Samsung. This 23.8 inch Full HD IPS refers to the panel type is 8-bit (using the FRC method) and is equipped with the usual W-LED backlighting SHI-modulation. Aspect ratio standard 16:9.

The model replicates many of the model Dell series U and P the last 2-3 years — in this case, it’s kind of a mixture thereof. The monitor is frameless: the outer framework, consider,, but there is only the inner three thin on top, left and right, and one wide bottom, with a plastic overlay on top of it.

The stated maximum brightness is 250 CD/m2, a static contrast ratio of 1000:1, viewing angles of 178 degrees in both planes, the response time, measured by the method of GtG 8 MS in the Fast mode. Use semi-gloss protective surface of the matrix.

Focus on wireless transmissions affected not only in a very limited selection of ports to connect (one HDMI 1.4), but in the maximum vertical frequency of 60 Hz.But to work with peripherals there are four USB 3.0 ports and one audio Jack 3.5 mm Built-in acoustics no.

When you use the WiDi control may be passed to the peripherals connected directly to the monitor. In other words, you can transfer the picture from your laptop or smartphone/tablet to the Dell U2417HWi and control with the mouse and keyboard connected to its USB ports. In addition to duplicating images, a possible extension of the working field, but only for the primary device (laptop, PC).

As the requirements on the hardware for use WiDi the manufacturer indicates the following: Intel not lower than the 4th generation (Haswell) and Dual-Band Wi-Fi-module standard AC. As recommendations are wireless modules Intel but are supported and the chips are Broadcom, Qualcomm/Atheros.

Dell U2417HWi: Package contents and appearance

The package includes the following:

  • power cable;
  • HDMI cable;
  • USB cable for PC connection;
  • plastic element of the system of laying the wires;
  • the quick installation guide and setup;
  • a prospectus for the safe use;
  • a prospectus for the safe use of wireless connections;
  • information about service;
  • report on the factory calibration;
  • CD with drivers and instructions.

The manufacturer did a good job — everything you need to connect Packed in box. However, the monitor has a single wire interface for signal transmission — HDMI version 1.4, so it does a lot of cables laying and didn’t have to.

The report on factory calibration promises virtually perfect color reproduction in sRGB mode. We will not speculate about its authenticity, but just check the fidelity of the pictures in the appropriate section.

And now let’s talk about design. As we mentioned, the new Dell U2417HWi is a hodgepodge of models from several major series of the company. “Frameless” design inscribed into the body, familiar on the previous monitors U series, and the stand and Central stand is taken from one of the latest models of the family P. the Shapes and colors of familiar elements, just matte plastic.

Fastening system to the body allows you to quickly remove the panel itself — the button-lock is located just below the mounting plate. Supported VESA-compliant mounting standard 100 × 100 mm.

Oval cutout at the bottom of the Central column plays the role of system cabling.

It complements a separate plastic element supplied with hiding the connections of the cables and a friend to us for many other models from the American manufacturer. However, the effect of a few, but to improve the appearance of the monitor when viewed at its “back” plastic end cap may.

The ergonomic stand provides height adjustment in the range 85 mm, tilt range from -5 to +25 degrees, and rotate the housing 45 degrees in both directions.

There is the possibility of the coup of the screen in portrait mode (Pivot), but because of this, the alignment of the case was imperfect.

The base of the stand is made of plastic, it includes six rubber feet of different shapes.

Dell U2417HWi used matrix with semi-matte surface (when compared with its other, however, can be called matte). It has sufficient anti-reflection properties, and crystalline effect is not too noticeable.

The sticker in the rear of the chassis and one under the center pillar fasteners allow you to learn some information about the used to monitor the wireless module.

All connection ports located in the rear of the housing and is directed down. Since the monitor can be rotated to a vertical position, connect the cables very convenient.

All materials used in Dell U2417HWi materials are of high quality and practicality, and simply familiar design pleases the eye and fits perfectly into any interior.

The build quality of the hero of the review is not to find fault. Edging is ideal, the minimum clearance along the entire length of joints, painting of elements does not cause complaints. Case no crunches and no squeaks, and is virtually impossible to curl. I am glad that such quality can be found not only in expensive models of Dell, but in a relatively affordable.

Dell U2417HWi: Menu and control

Display management is performed using five touch keys located in the right part of the lower plastic frame. The power led located on the bottom edge, below the power button.

Speed menu high, but not always the low sensitivity of the sensor unit — you have to press twice. The controls are logical and not uncomfortable with any level of ambient light, in particular due to the on-screen prompts.

Clicking on any of the four main control “buttons” at the bottom of the screen there is a navigation bar with icons. By the way, the function of two of the five keys can be overridden in the special menu section.

Mode for preset manual (Custom Color) you can adjust parameters such as gain, shift, hue and colour saturation.

The menu design is typical for new products Dell — it is dominated by bright colors and familiar structure. Just monitor menu Dell U2417HWi eight sections. In the first are the settings of brightness and contrast.

This is followed by the selection of the signal source and the ability to activate automatic switching.

In the Color section the user can select the signal format, the setting, the preset picture mode or reset these settings to default values.

The next section, the Display has been seriously reduced. It left settings scalera image, change the sharpness of the picture and activating dynamic contrast ratio available only in a few preset modes.

To determine the behavior of the indicator power and USB ports capable of charging connected devices is offered in the section Energy.

In the Menu you can set language, change the transparency, rotate the picture into portrait mode, set the timer for disappearance of the OSD screen to block it.

Two keys with quick access, you can reassign to your liking. There are five available options, including seldom-used Rotation for reversal of menu when using the display in portrait mode.

The last section, Other, allows you to disable DDC/CI interface, to enable the sound pressing the touch keys and enable LCD Conditioning to check the screen for dead pixels without a computer (useful if you purchase at the store). The Factory Reset option resets without exception, all menu settings to the factory settings.

Dell U2417HWi: Wireless connection

For wireless connection to monitor Dell U2417HWi we used the HP Spectre 13 laptop with Wi-Fi adapter Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 and the smartphone Xiaomi Redmi 3S on the basis of MIUI 8 (Android 6.0.1). In both cases, according to the instructions on the Dell website, need to install a separate application Dell Wireless Monitor. For Windows it was more like a special driver, and for Android was a utility to directly access settings WiDi.

The first step is to choose the wireless signal source in the monitor settings. After that, the screen displays a colorful screen saver with instructions. If the monitor connected to the mouse, the user can easily get to the hidden display settings, among which you can find a selection of the working range Wi-Fi, change the name “access points”, the improvement in image quality (manufacturer informs about the increase of the delay time of the output signal).

To connect Dell U2417HWi only a smartphone or tablet on Android (iOS, Mac OS and thus all Apple devices are not supported) – not worth buying this monitor. After all, the manufacturer largely relies on the possibility of simultaneous operation with the main source signal device (on Windows) and the secondary with one set of peripherals. To demonstrate how it works, we installed it into one of the USB ports on the hero receiver wireless “rodent”.

Dell U2417HWi Review wireless Full HD monitor

When you first connect the laptop to Dell U2417HWi, apparently, there was a firmware update for the monitor, and double. And most importantly – in automatic mode: the system does not ask permission. It took about 5 minutes, after which the display had to be off, and to create a wireless connection without errors and reset all settings to factory defaults. Then in Windows press the key combination Win+K, select your monitor and agree to the transfer of control devices that are connected to it. If none exist, control is maintained over the base unit.On the phone included in the downloaded application, select the Wi-Fi access point Dell U2417HWi and agree on the inclusion of Bluetooth to enable control of keyboard and mouse. For half a minute get on the screen a picture of a laptop and a separate window with variable size and position Android smartphone.

Let us say at once – delayed output signal is obvious, especially in the case of Android. The picture itself is a little loose due to the compression by means of Intel in your laptop, but to it quickly get used. Not of the highest quality and image with a smartphone, but there are likely to impact small by modern standards, the screen resolution at the Redmi 3S. On the other hand, it is scary to think what could be delay when typing if we used the smartphone with a QHD display.

Managing laptop with the mouse connected to Dell U2417HWi, caused no discomfort, but about working with your smartphone, the same will not tell. In his case, the delay was very high, the cursor was moving reluctantly, and “mouse” capabilities are not that enough to. Go to the section above, to scroll a page in Instagram, click on the “button” — Yes, but to get back, had to pick up a smartphone. However, we assume that there is a certain combination of keys on the keyboard, which can produce the same action. But we never found it.

To configure the input using a physical keyboard, the user will have to perform several actions on the phone (to set the default Android keyboard), then he will easily be able to reply to messages. The transition from one language to another by pressing Ctrl+Shift or Win+Shift. Delay I/o still noticeable.

Assuming tasks that the manufacturer has set for a bunch of this kind (working on a laptop/PC and be aware of what is happening on the phone, sometimes answering in a variety of messengers), it looks strange need to continuously work screen smartphone. Apparently, it is a feature of the technology of this type (Intel WiDi, Miracast), and in another yet to be. On Windows devices, no such restriction. Screens can be expanded (to work for two, thus increasing the workspace), duplicate (as in the video above) or display an image only on Dell U2417HWi.

Enabling improvement of picture quality (Dell recommends when viewing video content) via the monitor settings in the wireless mode does lead to change. But, unfortunately, the image quality (mostly its definition) is not changing as much as input lag, which in some cases seconds, which is noticeable when scrolling sites with plenty of graphics. On the videos, to our surprise, such an obvious difference between the quality modes no.General conclusions for wireless image transmission from Dell U2417HWi’ll do at the end of the material, and yet turn to our standard test.

Dell U2417HWi: Testing

Testing methodology

Monitor Dell U2417HWi was tested on the updated method using a colorimeter X-Rite i1 Display Pro combined with the reference spectrophotometer X-Rite i1 Pro, software designed c Argyll CMS GUI dispcalGUI and HCFR Colormeter software. All operations were carried out in Windows 8.1, during testing, the refresh rate was 60 Hz.

In accordance with the methodology, we will measure the following monitor settings:

  • brightness of white brightness of black the contrast ratio when you power the backlight from 0 to 100 % in 10% increments;
  • color gamut;
  • the color temperature;
  • the gamma curves of the three primary colors RGB;
  • gamma curve gray;
  • the color deviation DeltaE (standard CIEDE1994);
  • the uniformity of illumination, uniformity, color temperature (in degrees Kelvin and the units of DeltaE deviation) when the brightness of the center point 100 CD/m2.

All the above measurements were carried out before and after the calibration. During the tests we measure the main monitor profiles: exhibited by default, sRGB (if available) and Adobe RGB (if available). Calibration is held in the profile exposed by default, except in special cases which will be discussed further. For monitors with an extended color gamut, we choose the hardware emulation sRGB, if available. Before the start of all tests monitor warms up for 3-4 hours and all settings are reset to factory.

Also we will continue our old practice of publishing profiles for calibration we tested the monitors at the end of the article. The test laboratory 3DNews warns that such a profile can not 100% correct deficiencies specifically for your monitor. The fact that all the monitors (even within the same model) will necessarily differ from each other by small errors of color. To make two identical matrix is physically impossible, therefore, for any serious monitor calibration necessary colorimeter or spectrophotometer.But “universal” profile created for a specific instance, in General, can improve the situation and the other devices of the same model, especially in the case of cheap displays with pronounced defects color.

Performance parameters

The monitor Dell U2417HWi manufacturer uses seven preset modes and provides the ability to set the color temperature in a special profile Color Temp. When testing the monitor we used the HDMI interface — other then and there.

Default settings main parameters as follows:

  • picture mode – Standard;
  • brightness – 75;
  • contrast – 75;
  • gamma – PC.

During manual adjustment mode Custom Color under brightness of 100 nits and the color temperature of the white point of 6500 K, they took the following form:

  • picture mode – Custom Color;
  • color temperature (RGB) – 99/98/96;
  • brightness – 32;
  • contrast – 75;
  • gamma – PC.

Major changes have occurred through revisions to the RGB Gain. The contrast was not altered in the absence of improvements of gamma curves.

White brightness, black brightness, contrast ratio

Testing was carried out in Standard mode with the standard settings of the image.

The maximum brightness was at the level of 243 CD/m2, and the lower value was 18 CD/m2. Contrast ratio 1250:1 on average. Very good result, allowing to work behind the monitor in almost any ambient light levels and is fully compliant with the stated specifications (for contrast, even with the stock).

Results with the default settings

Dell U2417HWi color triangle on the CIE diagram is noticeably shifted relative to the standard sRGB. Means of deliverance from the shades that are outside of the triangle, is to use the ICM/ICC profiles, and software products that support a color management system (CMS). But to increase the unaffected region – an impossible task.

In standard installations the color gamut of the monitor corresponds to 88,4 % sRGB and 64.7 % AdobeRGB. The result is average.

The white point is also configured at the secondary level, but the stability of the color temperature of shades of gray – is quite high. The visible spurious tones are completely absent.

The gamma curves rise much above the reference line, which ultimately leads to low-contrast image on the screen.

Because of this and because of not very high matching the color gamut of the monitor to the sRGB standard, the results in the test Argyll CMS were below average. To work with color Dell U2417HWi in this form are not good.

Results after calibration

Manual adjustment and calibration can be corrected only part of the problem than we do.

After the procedure the color gamut of the monitor has changed within the error of measurement.

The white point came at the required rate, and the stability shades of grey is seriously increased.

Disappeared issues associated with the gamma curves. Now they lie strictly to the reference line. The contrast of the picture due to this was recovered.

During the calibration was created an individual profile of the device on which the data is now oriented to all programs that support color management system (CMS). And therefore the test results from Argyll CMS for color accuracy was expectedly high. However, given the TSO below 90% sRGB, monitor Dell U2417HWi we can advise only for Amateur color.

Results in sRGB

We will look at the preset sRGB mode, for which the manufacturer is betting the report on factory calibration. When it is activated it is possible to change the brightness and contrast, but there is no adjustment of RGB levels.

The position of the triangle on the CIE diagram change slightly. Color gamut set at the level 90.1% of sRGB. It’s better than the factory settings, but, frankly, spot the difference by eye is extremely difficult.

Much to our surprise, the white point was configured significantly worse than in Standard Mode. All of the values shifted towards cold tones. The stability of the color temperature of shades of gray is average.

But with the gamma curves, the situation is reversed – the Dell engineers apparently worked. Yes, they don’t exactly match the reference curve, but it’s still better than in standard installations.

Summary of failed test results Argyll CMS. The average deviations of color was twice lower than in Standard Mode, however, the white point – the problem in the studied regime. To combine the best of both presets in one Dell failed. Perhaps such tasks and were not…

Lighting uniformity

The uniformity of the backlight was tested after reducing the brightness at the center point of the monitor to 100 CD/m2. Color temperature was very close to the level of 6500 K at the expense of edits RGB Gain mode Custom Color.

The first picture shows the photo of a white field with some expopark during shooting (in the dark) and the further software processing for a more transparent view of uniformity of illumination. It is possible to see the most shaded area of the matrix – the lower left corner.

The average deviation from the center point according to the brightness level of 7.7 %, the maximum did not exceed 24 %. The result is below average, especially for such a small diagonal.

The variation in the color temperature amounted to 432 Kelvin. The average deviation from the center point of 2.9 %, a maximum of 6.6 %. The result is average. Color temperature gradually decreases from the center to all four corners. This dependence is uncommon, but it is the case. It’s better than sudden changes in one or two areas.

Diagram of the surface deviations of the color temperature, expressed in units of DeltaE coincides with the previous picture. It is clear that after manual adjustment of the white point in the middle of the matrix, and all other areas visually will differ markedly, and it reflects the average deviation of 4.5 units DeltaE.

To demonstrate the uniformity of illumination on a black field, we decided to keep two pictures with different exposures. One of them, you can see that the monitor is most strongly lighting up the two right angle and two left illumination is weak, but with strong spurious tones. The second photo shows a more realistic picture is how it looks in visual estimation, when the user sits before the monitor. It becomes clear that there are problems, but they are not global — afraid of nothing.

In the actual work after reducing the backlight brightness to an optimum level (80-120 CD/m2) problems with black uniformity become less noticeable. Much stronger stopping Glow-effect, which cannot be erased. Otherwise, the level of uniformity of illumination on the black is not much different from many other Full HD models with a similar screen size. Also do not forget that uniformity on black is sometimes highly dependent on a specific instance.

Dell U2417HWi: Visual assessment of image and model features

Quality gradients and speed of response

Despite the 8-bit IPS-type matrix, the Dell U2417HWi failed to demonstrate perfect gradients. In factory installations it is possible to observe several abrupt transitions in the field of 0-25 %.

After manual edits of the main operating parameters in Custom mode Color quality of tone transitions is not impaired, however, the edits you made in your video card’s LUT to bring the gamma curves to perfect sight, seriously change the situation. There are many abrupt transitions from spurious tones, which can be seen on the right.

Strange but true: Dell U2417HWi there is no possibility of choosing the degree of acceleration of the matrix (Overdrive). The response speed is used in the monitor matrix is quite typical for modern IPS-type solutions with a standard vertical frequency of 60 Hz. And due to the lack of visible artifacts there is a certain probability that the acceleration in the hero of the review is not applicable at all.

Viewing angles and Glow-effect

In General, the viewing angles the model is not worse than most small representatives of the IPS-type camp.

With a slight change of viewing angle in the horizontal plane the picture on the screen does not change. If you increase the angle to 30-45 degrees, the image becomes slightly less contrast and reduced saturation of certain colors, wyswietlacze the shadows, there is a slight color shift (color-shift). When you look at the top or bottom changes more manifest they are faster, but in comparison with TN+Film monitors them, you might say, and no.

From Glow-effect of the tested monitor are not spared, as it is constructed based on the matrix IPS type. Depending on the user position in front of the screen with black fill spurious tone and the degree of its manifestation vary greatly. To reduce the visibility of Glow (of course, not completely) by using decreasing the brightness of the backlight.

On the color image Glow is also present, and in a pronounced degree. This moment made us ponder the question: is it possible to set the matrix better?

Crystalline effect, Cross-hatching, PWM

The monitor Dell U2417HWi used semimatte surface of the matrix, but not the same as most other displays.

The structure of the protective film is quite rough, and therefore, to completely get rid of crystalline effect, the manufacturer failed. Perhaps the surface you can even be attributed to Matt, although the close-up shot so you could not tell. When you change the viewing angle (only when viewed from above or from below) the crystalline effect is a little enhanced. But the effect of the Cross Hatching, the hero of the review have been identified.

According to the manufacturer, the display has a Flicker-Free backlight that was confirmed during our tests. At any level of brightness SHIH-modulation is not used, or its frequency is a few kilohertz or tens of kilohertz. For your eyes users can be calm. There are not forget the need to take breaks at work and not to put too high brightness in low or medium ambient light.

Dell U2417HWi: Conclusion

Dell U2417HWi is good Full HD monitor for those who want to get rid of the wires, but only if we forget about its price and not the quality of the factory setup. A potential user should be aware of the fact that to achieve an equally smooth, sharp and quality pictures, as for a wired connection when using WiDi will not work.Wireless Display technology, despite the technical specifications, even at the end of 2016 incapable of this. And if you activate the mode improve the image quality, the delay of the output increases even more.But if you don’t look closely, the overall picture looks quite normal.

Seamlessly work with two devices at the same time – marketing “feature” of the display, that’s just not so it’s all good. Slow, lagging the cursor, limited capacity, continuously running screen smartphone/tablet is the minimum of what you will encounter if you are going to use this feature. For owners of smartphones with QHD screens and we do fear twice.

If we consider novelty as the usual 23.8 inch Full HD IPS-type monitor… then no point in buying it there. There are more affordable models, Dell U2417HWi no way inferior in quality and offering more opportunities for a wired connection devices.
