ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD review: Gaming Laptop with Intel Core i7-7700HQ and GeForce GTX 1050

CES in Las Vegas was the reason for numerous announcements. Intel introduced new mobile processors Kaby Lake, targeted at high-performance gaming laptops and desktop CPU. The new chipset was announced, allowing motherboard manufacturers to introduce new products.

But NVIDIA has prepared a new mobile video Pascal. In the case of GeForce GTX 1050 (Ti), the mobile version is almost 1: 1 corresponds to the desktop version. In our test lab just arrived a 17-inch laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD with Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050.

Exhibition CES 2017 officially opens in Las Vegas January 5, but many manufacturers have already announced their own products. And at the present Consumer Electronics Show, many announcements are associated not with smartphones, tablets and cars, as with the classic PC components. Intel introduced a processor Kaby Lake seventh generation Core for desktops and notebooks (HQ line).

We recall that a few months ago came Kaby Lake mobile processors for ultrabooks. NVIDIA pleased with the new mobile graphics card GeForce GTX 1050 and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which are not inferior to the desktop version. In addition, despite the increase in performance compared to predecessors, they need to work more efficiently.

From laptops to mobile GPU GeForce GTX 1080, 1070 and 1060 GTX ASUS especially not in a hurry, showing a single model on the Gamescom, then at the IFA a week later. But processors Kaby Lake and now the fourth and fifth mobile chip Pascal ASUS has decided to come forward. Laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD one of the first to receive a new processor and a new graphics card.

Our test model is based on the Intel Core i7-7700HQ and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory. Note the presence of 16 GB DDR4 memory at 2400 MHz, 256 GB SSD and, of course, a 2.5 “magnetic hard disk to 1 TB of storage applications and games. No optical drive has long been possible to do, but the ASUS is still installed in the laptop writing DVD drive. However, the 17.3 “chassis is readily admits. There are also modern interfaces, including port USB 3.1 Type C, backlit keyboard RGB LED, high quality speakers B & O.

But for a new laptop with a GeForce processor and Kaby Lake in the line of Republic of the Gamers will have to pay 1,500 euros. Below, we look at whether it’s price.

We have already tested the first representative of a new line of Strix – laptop the ROG Strix GL502V the ASUS . Now in our lab did the larger 17-inch laptop ASUS, whose body has been finalized. The display lid still uses a textured aluminum with a beautiful ROG logo on the center, but inside we get plastic with soft touch coating. Although plastic is trimmed in aluminum. In the lower right corner of the main body emblazoned logo again but WASD keys stand out not so much. But the keyboard backlight no longer single-colored, thanks to RGB LED, you can choose different colors and effects via the utility.

In the manufacture of quality complaints have arisen, ASUS traditionally high. The body is not pressed, all gaps are uniform, the display hinges keep the lid firmly.

With dimensions of 415 x 273 x laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD still be called a compact 320 mm and a weight of about 3 kg into account the fact that this is a game model with a 17.3-inch display. Other comparable notebooks are usually wider and thicker and heavier. Therefore, a laptop you can take on a LAN-party with no problems.

As we have noted above, the top panel of the main body ASUS has chosen the traditional black color with red color accents, though the notebook looks modest Skylake previously tested models. WASD keys highlighted once again, but this time white, not bright orange. ASUS also did not add colored grille on the right and left speakers under the keyboard. The old color scheme survived except for the fringe touchpad and ROG logo. In any case, the laptop deserves additives “Strix”. If only because of the keyboard from the RGB-backlit, which meets for the first time.

The most important gaming keys are highlighted, but ambitious gamers would not prevent other functions. Unfortunately, ASUS completely abandoned macro keys. But, at least, when the mouse is connected, you can disable the touchpad or Windows key, albeit through the utility.

Good keyboard and touchpad

ASUS also finalized the keyboard. Keys still have a size of 16×16 mm, the distance between them is 4 mm, the process became more gain or play generally comfortably. ASUS has traditionally used standard keyboard shortcuts to facilitate the transition from a desktop keyboard. Note that we tested the laptop with the German layout, in Russia it will be sold to the Russian language. There is also a numeric keypad, but it is quite expected, given the 17-inch format.

Above the number pad is ROG button that you can use to run the Gaming Center. In the utility, you can see basic information about the performance of the laptop. It displays not only the load on the graphics card and processor, but also the clock frequency and temperature. You can control the fan controller operation, enable / disable the touchpad and the Windows key.

Touch-pad with dimensions of 105 x 74 mm became slightly narrower, but deeper. Sliding your finger is excellent, as well as its predecessor, recognizing multitouch gestures became more accurate. For example, you can conveniently scroll the browser window with two fingers, or reduce / raise your fingers for zooming. The right and left mouse buttons are not separate from the surface of the touchpad, but there is a dividing line between them. The return button is good, they are pressed convenient, with a loud click.

ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD review: Gaming Laptop with Intel Core i7-7700HQ and GeForce GTX 1050

On interfaces ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD not happy at all. Of course, you will get a modern interface Type C, but it is only USB 3.1 Gen 2, 3, the Thunderbolt is not supported. On the left side of the notebook can be seen two interface USB 3.1 Gen 1 and Type A, combo port for connecting a headset, HDMI and mini-Display outputs and Gigabit LAN. Interfaces are shifted forward to make room for multiple air vents. Unfortunately, this approach does not allow to avoid the hodgepodge of cables on the desktop.

ASUS has done the same thing on the other side, but this rear part is not used for cooling, and the optical drive. Here the user gets two more USB ports. The power supply 120 watts connected to the opposite side closer to the rear.

Bottom ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD you can see a few air vents in addition to the four legs, painted bright orange. Unfortunately, the ASUS refused to door bottom, which opens access to the SSD, hard drive and memory. To reach them, it is necessary to remove the entire bottom panel. The battery capacity of 48.2 Wh, nonremovable, replace it quickly fail.

Pretty quiet cooling system

The notebook is equipped with ASUS ROG GL753VD quite productive processor Intel Core i7-7700HQ generation Kaby Lake, but the graphics card is not the most powerful in the line of Pascal – GeForce GTX 1050 with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory, but performance should be sufficient for gaming in Full-HD. Here we get about the level of GeForce GTX 965M. Therefore, the cooling system is working fairly quiet. ASUS has installed the vents just below and to the left panel.

ASUS once again paid attention to detail. Aluminum fins for air vents have the same orange color as the leg or ROG logo.

The quality of housing ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD not have to go on compromises. But what about the laptop performance and cooling system? This is what we just discussed below.

ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD review: Gaming Laptop with Intel Core i7-7700HQ and GeForce GTX 1050

System performance

Although the card has been significantly curtailed, ASUS is still based on a very powerful processor Core i7, which should have a positive impact on test results. Instead, Intel Core i7-6700HQ the previous generation, now uses Intel Core i7-7700HQ, which Intel has officially unveiled at CES 2017. The processor is still produced by 14-nm process technology and is working with TDP of 45 watts, but the CPU is working more efficiently and higher productivity.

Intel, in particular, able to increase the clock frequency. Preceded Skylake worked with a base frequency of 2.6 GHz, with Turbo mode, the frequency increased to 3.5GHz, but the model Kaby Lake, we get an increase of 200-300 MHz. The base rate is now 2.8 GHz mode Turbo accelerates the processor to 3.8 GHz. L3 cache remains at 6MB, the same applies to 1 MB L2 cache and 32 KB instruction cache and data on the core. At Intel Core i7-7700HQ are four processing cores that can execute two threads each thanks to Hyper-Threading.

As for memory, the ASUS established in ROG Strix GL753VD modern DDR4 strap, which work at a frequency of 2.400 MHz in dual channel mode. In our tests throughput was 23.27 GB / s. Other notebooks comparable level of price and performance is usually not allowed more than 20 GB / s.

The compression test of 7-Zip laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD showed about 20.800 MIPS, which is slightly above average – the reason lies in the rapid processor and memory. Intel Core i7-7700HQ score of 8.12 and 739 points in the two tests Cinebench. For comparison: Intel Core i7-6700HQ could issue only about 7.4, or 670 points.

Built-in 256 GB SSD does not use a PCI Express interface and NVMe protocol, only the SATA, so we get an average reading speed of the order of 530 MB / s. But pre-installed Windows 10 loaded pretty quickly, and the game program will start without delay. For storage applications and games offers the usual laptop hard drive capacity of 1 TB. Speed with HDD is about 90 MB / s.

Gaming performance

In laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD we get not only the new processor, but also a new video card. Until now, mobile video Pascal limited only NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 “from below”, but now we have new models GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and GeForce GTX 1050. Both cards are not inferior to desktop solutions, as can be seen in performance. Graphics cards based on chip GP107, containing 3.3 billion. Transistors, the maximum power consumption is 75 watts. GPU GP107 is based on two clusters GPC, streaming multi-processors and CPUs. But, compared to the “elders” GPU106, which is used for the same video cards GeForce GTX 1060, the NVIDIA removed four or five streaming multiprocessors of ten, taking into account the 128 stream processors each SMM we get 768 or 640 stream processors, depending on the configuration . The GeForce GTX 1050 is about half compared to the GeForce GTX 1060. Each SMM NVIDIA connected the eight texture units, as a result we get 48 or 40 TMU.

According to the memory subsystem will have to make some sacrifices. NVIDIA once again removed the 64-bit controller, but left fast chips GDDR5. Memory works on a 128-bit interface. To each of four 32-bit blocks are connected conveyors eight raster operations, giving in total 32 ROP. Like the desktop chips GeForce GTX 1050 (Ti), NVIDIA has transferred the production of 16-nm FinFET process technology TSMC 14-nm process technology Samsung. However, the reduction in technical process step has not resulted in any revolutionary consequences for energy consumption that we have seen on the test results .

In the case of ROG Strix GL753VD ASUS chose “junior” version of 3D-accelerator without the addition of Ti, namely the GeForce GTX 1050. According to the ASUS, surcharge for Ti is too high, and the difference in performance from 1050 is too low. It is a pity that ASUS did not allow to save on the processor, because the Core i5 is much cheaper. And the GeForce GTX 1050 would be better to combine just with Core i5. The card works with a base frequency of 1.354 MHz, Boost mode, it increases, at least up to 1.493 MHz and 4 GB of GDDR5 memory running at 1,752 MHz with a bandwidth of 112.1 GB / s.

However, with the game of any performance I had no problem. The notebook has successfully coped with all current games. Although in some cases the performance was still too weak for the native resolution of Full-HD, but could reduce the level of detail. In Tomb Raider performance was enough for 1080p resolution – we got about 80 frames per second. In DiRT Rally frame rate of 60 fps, in GTA V – 50 fps, which above the level of the game console. The Witcher 3, Total War: Attila and Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor performance was much lower – about 30 fps.

Good body temperature

We did not find any problems cooling system ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD. Kaby Lake Processor was heated to 85 ° C, but the video card worked with a much lower temperature of about 69 ° C. Temperatures body surface were much lower: even under full load, the average temperature was only from 25.1 to 26,7 ° C. The highest temperature level we have in the fourth square from above – 31 ° C. Bottom laptop poorly heated, so you can work with it on your lap, although due to the large size 17-inch format is still problematic.

Despite the good temperature of the body surface and a relatively low temperature of the components, ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD worked pretty quiet. Under the regular Windows desktop noise level was just above the 34 dB (A). If you load the CPU and GPU tests Prime95 and Furmark, the noise level will increase to 46.3 dB (A). Of course, the noise level can not be considered low, but compared to other gaming notebooks result is quite good. Recall that most competitors exceed the bar of 50 dB (A).

Battery life

With the new generation Kaby Lake Intel processors was able to increase the effectiveness of your CPU, including mobile chips. GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card works with very small TDP of 75W, so we expected to get longer battery life. While many manufacturers have reduced the capacity of the built-in battery to reduce weight. That’s what the ASUS. The gaming notebook ROG Strix GL753VD installed battery with a capacity of 48 Wh, while many other models we get the battery to 64 or even 90 Wh. In office applications, a 17-inch laptop showed the battery life about six hours in game mode it has decreased to less than two hours. In any case, the results can be shown to be called satisfactory gaming notebook. Although we would have preferred a greater battery life under load, given the current components.

Great display

ASUS has equipped the laptop is excellent display. Thanks to IPS technology we have wide viewing angles, and because of the matt display is convenient to work on the street or in a brightly lit room. The brightness is also quite high, we have received a maximum of 337 cd / m². Between the darkest and brightest areas of the difference was only 29 cd / m², so the illumination uniformity can be called good – a little less than 92%. Is that the contrast may be higher, we got 885: 1.

Many gaming notebooks display gives the blue, but ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD color temperature closer to the ideal. We got the color temperature of the white point of 6500 K, which actually corresponds to the optimal level. The display resolution is 1.920 x 1.080 pixels. It is a pity that the 17.3-inch notebook does not support NVIDIA G-Sync technology.

ASUS ROG Strix updated line of laptops with the new generation Kaby Lake processors and new graphics Pascal. The body has changed slightly, but the workmanship raises no objections. Instead of one-color backlit keyboard is now backlit RGB LED. So gaming laptop better fit for purpose.

Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor provides good performance, but still it is too fast for the video card capabilities, as ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD a version of GeForce GTX 1050 without the addition of Ti. Of course, the graphics card GTX markedly inferior to 1060, but it remains quite productive for today’s games. But not always enough to solve the Full-HD and full performance level GPU GP107 detail. The same game of Tomb Raider and DiRT Rally quite successfully launched in 1080p with a full level of detail, but in games The Witcher 3, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, and Total War: Attila had to reduce the level of detail. It seems to us, Core i5 processor would be quite cope with the set 3D-accelerator, which can be seen well on the tests of the same HP Omen 17-w100 with the GeForce GTX 1060.

Thanks to the SSD speed, connected via the SATA, the operating system boots quickly, games and applications will start without delay. The laptop is added to the 2.5 “hard disk drive capacity of 1 TB. The screen quality is excellent. It is not only very bright, but also pleases good uniformity of illumination and color temperature close to that ideal. Is that the contrast may be higher.

Improved efficiency Kaby Lake and Pascal ASUS graphics cards allow to reduce the capacity of the battery. The laptop battery is installed on a 48 Wh, which provides a battery life of two to six hours, depending on the load.

In general, we get a good gaming notebook, but the hardware configuration could be more balanced.

Advantages of ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD:

  • Great display
  • High performance in working applications
  • A good performance in most games
  • relatively quiet
  • Good battery life under office load

Disadvantages of ASUS ROG Strix GL753VD:

  • Some Full-HD gaming performance is still too small for a full level of detail
  • relatively expensive
