In early November we tested a new line of gaming laptops Strix – ASUS ROG Strix GL502V , which proved to be quite fast on the GTX model 1070. A little later, ASUS has sent in our test lab a larger model. GL702VM notebook is equipped with already 17.3-inch panel, instead of 15.6 “. Inside, too, it operates a high-speed processor Core i7, which complements the Pascal graphics card and a decent amount of memory. All the details you will find out in our review.
Aggressive appearance, powerful low frequencies thanks to a separate subwoofer, the RGB-stylish lighting, macro keys – all this nice gaming features, but not all gamers are willing to pay extra for them. Some people prefer to invest the hardware configuration. It is on these gamers and focused lineup ASUS ROG Strix. The notebook has no unnecessary adornments, functionality is limited to the basic level, the hardware is contained in a relatively simple and compact housing, but the price is very attractive.
Laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL502V perfectly demonstrated in our tests thanks to the Intel Core i7-6700HQ, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 and a decent amount of memory. But the display was limited to a 15.6-inch diagonal. If you require a larger diagonal size, you should select the following model according to seniority. Namely laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM, which features a 17.3-inch display, but the hardware at it less powerful. But the price is less – from 1.699 euros. For 15.6-inch ASUS ROG Strix GL502V will have to pay from 2,000 euros.
Like the models with smaller diagonal, GL702VM refers to rulers and ROG Strix. On the top of the display we received a predictably logo Republic of Gamers, but, unlike many gaming models, it is not highlighted. But ASUS has chosen a bright orange color instead of the usual red. The logo and two stripes next to greatly reflect ambient light, giving the impression that they are on.
ASUS once again used a mixture of brushed aluminum and plastic. The display lid is made of brushed aluminum, the bottom and the milestones of the main body – made of plastic. But the latter has additional coverage, so that leaves a high quality impression. ASUS has allocated WASD keys, important for gamers, as well as two speaker grilles beneath the keyboard on the right and left.
As with the “younger” model, workmanship ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM traditionally high. All uniform gaps, hinges keep the display safely, the case does not bend and does not rattle.
Outside ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM difficult to distinguish from the “younger” model. Although with dimensions 415 x 280 x 24 mm laptop still slightly larger, but thinner. It seems that ASUS has been able to better manage the space inside the case, which reduced the thickness of the notebook. But weight has increased from 2.0 kg to about 2.7 kg. However, GL702VM is still relatively mobile – a laptop, you can easily take with you to LAN-party. But wear it all the time with them will still tedious.
For the top panel of the main body continued ASUS old color scheme, highlighting the WASD keys and the lattice dynamics of color, respectively. Frame touchpad also highlighted. If you enable ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM, the firm will strengthen coloring backlit keyboard. All the keys are illuminated in red, the brightness of which can be adjusted in three stages. From fashionable lighting RGB LED ASUS refused.
ASUS has chosen a standard layout that simplifies the transition from the desktop to the laptop. Use the key combination Fn can be adjusted with the display brightness, volume and light. Macro keys not, that is unlikely to enjoy an ambitious gamers. But you can configure the touchpad off when you connect the USB-mouse. A separate button next to no.
As in the case of 15-inch model, we get the keyboard keys with the same 16 x 16 mm and a spacing of 4 mm – despite the 17.3-inch format. Not without a numeric keypad, as a result, ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM we get the same 103 keys that have GL502VS .
Touch-pad has a fairly broad dimensions of 104 x 74 mm. The finger glides over the surface of the well, supports multi-touch gestures, but the accuracy is poor. Scroll with two fingers in the browser worked perfectly. The right and left mouse buttons are not separate from the surface of the touchpad, but they are divided among themselves. The buttons are pressed with a loud click.
On interfaces ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM offers everything you need to ambitious gamers. On the right side is located behind the Gigabit LAN interface, the next – jack for connecting an external 180-watt power supply. To the right you can see the video outputs HDMI and mini-DisplayPort. Present and two USB interfaces, namely Type A and Type C. It’s nice that Type C jack works on USB 3.1 Gen 2 specifications and protocol support Thunderbolt 3. There were also a 3.5mm audio jack, which can be used for input and exit.
On the opposite side there are two USB ports, an SD slot and a Kensington lock cards to protect against theft. In general, the interfaces are located on panels ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM very thoughtful. Major ports are spaced as far as possible, on both sides there are USB ports for connecting a mouse that will please both right-handed and left-handers.
Below you can see the four rubber feet orange, as well as air vents for cooling components. Unlike the 15-inch model, the ASUS did not give up the bottom of the door, which opens access to the components. It provides quick access to the most important components that can easily be replaced / updated if there are technical skills. Thus, it is possible to upgrade the SSD, an additional 2.5-inch hard drive and two memory bars. But the battery is non-removable. ASUS has installed a battery 6 cell 76 Wh.
ASUS Silent trimmed hardware stuffing our test sample ROG GL702VM, but the processor Intel Core i7-6700HQ and NVIDIA, the GeForce GTX 1060 is still more powerful than the average level, so the cooling system has a hard time. Especially considering the fact that ASUS decided to reduce the thickness of the notebook, despite a powerful battery. Large ventilation openings at the ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM brought to the rear panel.
Over the vents can be seen bright orange radiator, blending in with the WASD keys, racks and speaker grilles. ASUS was able to once again show the attention to detail.
As shown by a review body ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM, do not have to make serious sacrifices in quality manufacturing. Below we look at the performance of the hardware filling and cooling systems.
Like most gaming laptops available in the market, ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM equipped with a processor Intel Core i7-6700HQ, which belongs to a generation of Skylake, although in early 2017 came a generation Kaby Lake. But Skylake processors can not be considered out of date. They continue to provide high performance with four physical cores. In addition, there is a Hyper-Threading support, thanks to which each core can simultaneously execute two threads. The base frequency is 2.6 GHz, depending on processor load may accelerate in some nuclei Turbo to 3.5 GHz. Note the presence of 6 MB of L3 cache and 1 MB cache L2, per core accounts for the last 256 kilobytes. As for the cache in the first level, it is at 32 KB for instructions and data. Intel indicates consumption of 45 W, in practice it reaches laptop processor. CPU is manufactured on 14-nm process technology.
The first gaming notebook with the CPU data often rely on DDR3, although the controller Skylake processor supports the current standard DDR4. But at the end of last year that all changed. Laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM also equipped with slats modern standard DDR4 at up to 2.133 MHz bandwidth reaches 13.29 GB / s. Compared to other models of this class gaming performance level is still too small. The reason lies in the fact that the memory strip running in single channel mode, which reduces the performance, even if in practice it shows not so much. The test file compression 7-Zip is our laptop ROG showed less performance 17.500 MIPS. With the result of 639 points, or 7.26 Intel Core i7-6700HQ performance in Cinebench was at the expected level.
SSD is still connected via SATA interface, the capacity reaches 512 MB / s. Sufficiently high level into practice, because the operating system boots in seconds, run the program almost instantly. SSD Capacities of 256 GB to store games and applications is still not enough, so ASUS has added a separate hard drive in 2.5 “format, providing speeds of up to 110 MB / s. Of course, the capacity is significantly inferior SSD, but it is enough games.
The gaming laptop is important not only to the processor and memory, and video card. ASUS to our test laptop has selected NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. Of course, it is weaker than the 1070 GTX in a 15-inch laptop, but the graphics card 1: 1 corresponds to the desktop model. So we get a desktop level of performance in a notebook format. Like the discrete graphics card PCI Express, the mobile GeForce GTX 1060 is based on the chip GP106 with 4.4 billion. Transistors, which contains 1,280 stream processors and 80 the TMU.
Compared to GeForce GTX 1070 in memory of the victim was brought to the subsystem. Instead of 256-bit interface, we get a 192-bit, that is, NVIDIA removed a 64-bit controller. The amount of video memory is 6 GB. At a frequency of 2.002 MHz GDDR5 memory provides bandwidth of 192GB / s. The GPU runs with a base frequency of 1.405 MHz, Boost mode, it increases, at least up to 1.671 MHz, which is just below the desktop graphics card – perhaps here lies the drop in productivity of 10%, which NVIDIA said. Our test laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM showed in practice GPU frequency of about 1.708 MHz, which is slightly above specifications. The chip is made on 16-nm process at TSMC FinFET plants.
GeForce GTX 1060 – a good addition to the GeForce GTX 1070, because the performance is sufficient to resolve the Full-HD. Depending on the game and the speed test, we obtained between 40 and 180 fps. Gamers will satisfy this level. However, at higher resolutions, and in the case of an external monitor GPU capabilities are very limited. As for the VR, namely HTC Vive points or Oculus Rift, here ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM also copes.
We did not find any problems with cooling ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM, although Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor is heated to a temperature of 91 ° C. But thermal throttling was not always the processor clocked at 3.1 GHz, even when the load on the four cores. The frequency corresponds to Intel specifications. Video heated a little less, to 87 ° C, but still provides a full performance level.
Despite the high temperature of the components, the surface is slightly heated. Under load on the upper and lower sides of the main body nearly average temperature exceeded 30 ° C, in the second quadrant of the maximum observed 46.4 and 44.8 ° C, respectively. Under normal operation Windows Surface temperatures were significantly lower on average 26.4 and 27,5 ° C, respectively.
In any case, the laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM worked pleasantly quiet for their performance class. In 2D-mode, we got the noise level to 33.9 dB (A), which can be called a great result. Under full load, the cooling system to work with a higher level of noise, but he still did not exceed 48.7 dB (A). The notebook can not be called quiet, but it worked nonetheless quieter many other gaming models.
Unlike the 15-inch model, ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM uses a more cost-effective graphics card, but this advantage is mitigated more diagonal display. But ASUS has set and more capacious battery with 76 Wh. Under the usual office load test notebook lasted almost three hours. Under load the gaming battery life was a little more than two hours, that is slightly smaller than the 15.6-inch notebook. On a full charge the battery required about 90 minutes. In any case, some other gaming laptops running on battery power for longer.
The quality of the panel ASUS ROG Strix GL502V showed convincing results. Although ASUS have passed our test sample at the LG panel instead of Philips, similar results. The panel has a matte finish, so comfortable with a laptop to work on the street. The brightness is also quite decent – up to 325 cd / m². The uniformity of illumination, too, was at an excellent level – below 91%, the difference between the light and dark areas did not exceed 27 cd / m². Contrast we got a very decent level of 1.007: 1.
As with most modern gaming notebooks, color reproduction tends to cold shades. white point temperature was 7.557 K, which is still warmer than some competitors. Recall that the optimum temperature – 6,500 K notebook display with a diagonal of 17.3 “has a resolution of 1.920 x 1.080 pixels and supports NVIDIA G-Sync technology that ensures a smooth gameplay.
Laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM much larger GL502V , which we tested earlier. But this is only the width and depth, as well as the display diagonal. Instead of the 15.6-inch panel, ASUS is now chosen 17.3 ‘. Due to the increased body size ASUS could ably fit the hardware components and the cooling system, even reducing the thickness. However, it should take into account the slightly less powerful hardware stuffing. Instead, the graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 1070 GTX our laptop used “younger” the GeForce GTX 1060, and instead of 512 GB SSD drive was installed with a storage capacity twice as less. The remaining components are nearly identical.
But the performance of the laptop is more than enough for all modern games, especially taking into account the native resolution of 1.920 x 1.080 pixels. In our game performance tests ranged from 40 to 180 fps. For higher resolution displays or external power 3D-accelerator is not enough. ASUS Laptop Buyers have to give up additional features such as NVMe SSD, RGB-lighting, macro keys or subwoofer. In addition, the appearance of the laptop is much more modest Strix many gaming competitors. However, we liked that the ASUS focused on the gaming features of the system.
Despite the larger display, ASUS has provided a good battery life in sleep mode. ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM stand for nearly three hours, which is associated with a fairly capacious battery at 76 Wh. However, many other notebooks on the market comes even more battery life. In idle mode, the system is very quiet under load the noise level increases to 48.7 dB (A), for a gaming notebook can be called tolerant. The surface temperature stayed in the “green” zone, the quality of the display is also nice ASUS pleased.
Like the 15-inch model, ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM can be called decent gaming laptop, and the price 1.699 euros noticeably smaller. If you’re willing to sacrifice a larger display of the gaming performance of the GPU, it is recommended to pay attention to the 17-inch model.
