In August at the Gamescom conference ASUS showed the first and only laptop to mobile GPUs Pascal, namely the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070. Of course, the company has announced other models, but the same ROG GX800 with water cooling will appear in a few weeks. Meanwhile, the range of ASUS laptops rose. Recently, the company introduced a line of ROG Strix GL502 that we received a few days after the announcement.
Many manufacturers, such as Clevo or MSI, have presented a wide range of laptops for a new mobile GPUs Pascal, not only on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070. But ASUS originally announced quite a limited range. Moreover, ASUS has focused not on the gaming conference Gamescom in August 2016, at the IFA exhibition in 2016, which was held later in Berlin. The gaming conference in Cologne, ASUS showed the only model on the GPU GP104 – ASUS ROG G752VS. Of course, at the booths of the Taiwanese company was the usual assortment of motherboards, graphics cards, monitors and sound cards. Also has information about the successor to ROG GX700 with water cooling. Laptop ROG GX800 uses two full GeForce GTX 1080.
A few days ago was announced another lineup of gaming laptops on mobile GPUs Pascal, which ASUS started using the Strix brand in the segment of laptops – earlier this beneath it was produced a desktop graphics card. ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS combines a fast Intel Core i7 processor with large memory capacity, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 and some other modern components. The laptop is encased in a quality aluminium case and plastic, as in the case of the recently tested Acer Predator 17, but we face more compact 15.6″ model. Below we discuss in more detail ROG laptop.
However, the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS, despite the addition of Strix, still refers to the line of Republic of Gamers. On the lid display the ROG logo emblazoned, albeit no backlight. However, he is so strongly reflects the incident light, the logo and two stripes on the right and left seem to be glowing. In addition, because of the contrast with the black cap, the color changes to a bright orange.
The ROG logo is on the top cover of the main body under the keyboard – here orange scheme continues. Critical gaming keys WASD are highlighted in the same color, the same can be said about the touchpad. Note the strips of speakers on the right and left. The workmanship is as you would expect from ASUS, is above average. The body never bend, even after strong pressure, gaps everywhere uniform, hinges the lid is very stable. As for the materials, ASUS chose a blend of plastic and aluminum. Display cover is made from black anodized and textured aluminum, the housing below the plastic. But the top cover of the main body is also decorated with a textured aluminum.
With dimensions of 390 x 266 x 30,1 mm laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS relatively thin – including with the new generation of graphics cards Pascal. ASUS correctly understood the promise of NVIDIA about the appearance of thin gaming laptops with higher performance than before. The weight is only 2.0 kg, which makes it easy to carry your laptop for the LAN party. So the new GL502V can quite honestly be called a compact 15.6-inch laptop.
As we mentioned, ASUS chose a traditional black design with red accents, which is continued on the top panel main body. Buttons WASD are highlighted, like box touchpad. After enabling 15.6-inch laptop you receive the expected illumination. The keyboard ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS a red light, the brightness which can be controlled in three stages. Previously ASUS used the brand “Strix” for products with an RGB backlight, but the manufacturer knows best.
Gamers will be pleased to receive the laptop, which is the most important key in the home games highlighted, but ambitious gamers need other functions. Unfortunately, ASUS has refused, for example, from macro-keys. But, at least, a touch-pad disabled when a mouse is connected through USB, let alone programmatically.
The keys are quite large – 16 x 16 mm, the space between them is perfect too – 4 mm. But the tactile feedback of the keys island was a bit spongy, the switching point could be felt better. But typing on the keyboard you like to play for a long time. ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS, despite the 15.6-inch format, a digital keyboard. But instead of NUM ROG installed, which opens the game center ASUS, where you can make the most important settings. And also to read the status of memory, clock frequency and temperature. Also via the utility ASUS you can quickly run your favorite games.
Touchpad ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS has a number of disadvantages. Of course, it is a rather large area of 106 x 67 mm, the finger slides perfectly, but it does not always accurately recognize multitouch gestures, for example, to zoom in. But at least two-finger scrolling worked perfectly. Left and right buttons are not highlighted, but they are easy to press if you use the correct pad. The buttons with a loud click.
The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS equipped with everything that you would like to see gamer. In the left panel are the card slot and Kensington lock for theft protection, we note two USB 3.0 with fast charging of smartphones and tablets, as well as a 3.5 mm audio Jack, which can be used for entrance and exit. But requires a headset with a combo plug.
On the opposite side to the test laptop connects to an external 180-watt power supply, there is a Gigabit LAN connector, outputs mini-DisplayPort and HDMI for connecting an external display or projector. There is one USB interface in the form of a modern socket Type C.
At the bottom of your ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS you can see the ventilation holes and bright orange legs. Unfortunately, the door for quick access to the SSD memory is not provided. But the bottom cover is removed very easily, then you can reach all the components. The battery is not removable.
Of course, the Intel Core i7-6700HQ and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 does not apply to flagship solutions, but still belong to high-end segment. Intel and NVIDIA in recent years has significantly improved the efficiency of their products, but they still impose quite severe requirements on the cooling system. Moreover, the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS can be attributed to the rather thin models. Many other manufacturers equip the laptop to the large ventilation holes on the rear panel, here they are relatively small.
ASUS is quite attentive to detail: the radiator is behind the vents in the back has the same orange hue as the logo cap display, WASD buttons on the keyboard and feet on the bottom.
Case ASUS ROG Strix GL502V quality, but what about performance components and cooling system? Below we will present the results of the tests.
In most gaming laptops of this class of price and performance is installed processor Intel Core i7-6700HQ. The situation will change unless the release of the seventh generation of processors, but Intel just announced the processor U-series ultrabooks on the architecture of Kaby Lake. In early January, needs to get desktop options. So Intel Core i7-6700HQ refers to the architecture of Skylake and produced by 14-nm process technology. Four physical cores support Hyper-Threading, which allows them to process eight threads simultaneously. Base frequency is 2.6 GHz, depending on load the CPU can accelerate certain cores to Turbo up to 3.5 GHz. Note the presence of 6 MB of L3 cache and 1 MB L2 cache, each core has 256 KB of the latter. As to the first level cache, it is 32 KB for instructions and data. Power consumption Intel specifies at 45 watts, in practice, the CPU of the laptop is ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS it reaches.
Memory controller the CPU supports the new memory standard DDR4, and DDR3 modules old. ASUS chose the memory of the new standard, the capacity is to 13.36 GB/s. compared to other gaming laptops it is too small. Other models easily exceed 20 GB/s. the Reason lies in the fact that the memory of our sample were installed in single channel mode. However, in practice this disadvantage is unlikely to be noticeable. In the corresponding test file compression 7-Zip, the ASUS ROG Strix GL502V showed a throughput slightly above 18.000 MIPs. In the two benchmarks Cinebench we got a 7.35 and 667 points – it is the expected level Intel Core i7-6700HQ.
The SSD connects via the SATA interface, transfer rate is slightly above 530 MB/s – fast enough to download Windows 10 Home and most of the pre-installed programs in seconds. For storing apps and games available hard disk capacity of 1 TB. It is slower – up to 114,4 MB/s.
Of course, for a gaming laptop in the first place – gaming performance. The Intel Core i7-6700HQ has an integrated graphics core, but for games it’s too weak. Therefore, ASUS has set a discrete graphics card based on the new Pascal architecture from NVIDIA. The laptop has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with 8 GB of GDDR5 memory. It is no worse than desktop models in laptops the graphics card was used since August of this year. NVIDIA says performance compared to the desktop version only about 10%. It is associated with a reduction in clock frequency, which is slightly kompensiruet increase in the number of stream processors. If you have the desktop version, we obtain 1.920 stream processors, the mobile chip 2.048 offers. The clock frequency of the chip and memory are significantly lower desktop graphics card – 1.443 2.002 MHz and MHz, respectively. Under load the GPU to accelerate at least up to 1.610 MHz, if enable temperature and power consumption. In games, we generally receive a similar level of frequency.
Compared to desktop graphics subsystem memory has not changed. In both cases, uses 8 GB of GDDR5 memory that NVIDIA connects via a 256-bit interface. At a frequency of 2.0 GHz memory provides bandwidth up to 256GB/s. the Chip is made for 16-nm FinFET process technology at the facilities of TSMC.
Current games, like Grand Theft Auto 5, Dirt Rally, The Witcher 3 or Shadow of Mordor for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS problems are not present. The more that the native resolution is limited to Full-HD. Depending on the test and the game we got from 40 to over 200 fps. So we have a gaming laptop without any reservations.
ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS the surface temperatures do not suspect that inside work hot components. Even under full load we get the maximum temperature of 45.5 °C. the average bottom temperature was 28 °C in the upper panel of the main body of 30.6 °C. the CPU heated to a decent temperature 92 °C. However, we are not faced with the temperature throttle in the tests, the CPU always provided the full performance level. The cooler coped with cooling the GPU GP104, the maximum temperature was about 87 °C. Of course, under normal office scenarios Windows the temperature was much lower. With the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS you can easily work on the knees, and in short play sessions. However, most users will prefer to play at your Desk.
The noise level of the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS pretty standard for this level of performance. We got the noise to 51.1 dB(A) under full load, ie under Prime95 and Furmark. In idle the noise level was 36.2 dB(A). So laptop can not be called very quiet.
In the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS integrated battery 64 W·h However it is not provides long battery life, despite economical chips Skylake and Pascal. Under office load, the laptop lasted nearly four hours, but after adding a load on the graphics card and the processor the battery life was less than two hours, that is two times less. Many other gaming laptops provide longer battery life, but they are thicker and are equipped with a more capacious battery. On a full charge the battery takes about 90 minutes.
The integrated IPS panel ensures wide viewing angles and no glare thanks to the matte finish. Therefore, with a laptop you can work on the street. The brightness is also very decent, we got a level to 313 CD/m2. The uniformity of the panel illumination Philips raises no objections, it is less than 92%, between the bright and dark area we get a total of 27 CD/m2. The contrast is very good – 1.022:1.
Unlike many gaming notebooks, ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS not observed blue colors. We were able to get the average level of 6,500 K, which is optimal. 15.6-inch screen supports NVIDIA G-Sync, even the resolution is only 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.
Thanks to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 and the processor Intel Core i7-6700HQ, the ASUS ROG Strix GL502V operates with a high level of performance. This concerns not only office, but also games. On laptop well go all modern games, although you’ll have to be content with native display resolution 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Our test games were displayed with a frame rate of 40 to more than 200 fps. But GL502VS we still lacked some modern features that would be useful to the gamer. These include the SSD with NVMe support, RGB-backlit keyboard with island keys and macro keys. But the laptop is relatively thin and looks simple but stylish.
Compact dimensions lead to restrictions on the battery. Inside a battery is installed on a 64 W·h, which is enough for two to four hours. Many other devices of this class of price and performance to provide more battery life. The same applies to noise. Of course, 51,1 dB(A) can be called standard for a gaming laptop, but some models are quieter. The quality of the case is accustomed to a high level, the temperature of surfaces is not so big, the color temperature of the display is also pleasing.
Overall, ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS – good gaming laptop, if you are willing to forego some additional bonuses. The price of 1.999 Euro is also quite adequate. We have indicated the recommended prices ASUS, in retail they may differ.
