Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 review and test: soft case with smart backlight

Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 review and test: soft case with smart backlight

In the body of the Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 line is an interesting distinguishing feature: the backlight changes color depending on the fan speed. In addition, the manufacturer has taken various measures to reduce noise levels.

We have not the first time the body of the test range Dead Silence. In 2013, through our test lab was “cube” MicroATX Cube DS (Dead Silence). A year later, we tested the first housing Midi Tower in the lineup – DS 200. These two models are available in different versions, including a bright backlight. But with the new housing Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 has chosen a different path – the housing will be sold only in black version. But happy family housing lights in different colors.

Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 | Appearance

Two LED-strips penetrate the front cover, two more LED-illuminated strip housing bottom on both sides. Illumination can be operated in a static mode, but also the effect of breathing is available, of course, can be completely turned off. The trick is that the backlight color can not only be set manually. It can vary depending on the selected mode and adjust the PWM fan speed. To display Aerocool speed using five of the seven colors: green, dark blue, white, orange and red, each of which corresponds to fan step controller 20 percent.

Fans body are connected through the card-dispenser to the motherboard PWM connector that allows you to reduce the noise level to a minimum. Tom and promote additional measures taken by the body manufacturer. The injection holes of the front fan go on the sidewalls of the front panel can be installed on top of the cover, which completely covers the vent holes. The two side panels and the front panel are provided with soundproof pads. The Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  can be set to six fans, and heat exchanger NWO format to 360 mm, so the cooling performance can be increased very significantly. However, nominally the housing is only one 120-mm fan on the rear panel. Aerocool promises that in the Midi Tower case enough space for modern components, with the result that we get a quiet universal body. In Russia, the Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  has not yet appeared, but in Europe it can be purchased at a very attractive price of 90 euros, despite the clever lighting. Price is not higher than that of similar housings quiet, such as Fractal Design Define R5.

Aerocool has limited the scope of delivery bag with fasteners, black puffs cable and Quick Start Guide.

Aerocool has decided to completely do without the external drive bays, allowing to abandon the front door.

After carefully release the plastic hooks, the front panel can be completely removed. During the panel, you can see the dust filter with a magnetic fastening. Also note and sound insulating material layer on the rear side of the panel. Finally, the vents are closed metal grid. From this angle is clearly visible plastic stand.

In front of any no connectors, their Aerocool transferred to the front of the lid. As you can see, the ports and buttons are relatively much. Buyer will receive a pair of USB 3.0 ports and USB 2.0, as well as two audio connectors for a headset. Right mounted large power button, located next to two other backlit control buttons. The left button toggles the backlight mode (including breathing, off), right – color (red, green, blue, orange, purple, blue, white and intelligent PWM mode). In the latter case, the color is automatically changed depending on the exposed speed PWM. On the transition to this mode can be judged by the double flashing. To the right of the power button, you can see a recessed reset button, press it so casually problematic. But if you want to restart your computer, you have to look for the paper clip or other object with a sharp end. Finger reset button is not pressed.

Under the hood there is room for two optional 120/140-mm fans, it is closed with a plate sound insulation layer. Fixing to the steel magnetic body, so cover can be easily removed. Aerocool shifted mounting 120mm fan to the left, there is a reason: between the lid and the upper end of the motherboard is only 2.5 cm of space, its barely enough for fans of standard thickness. If you want to install the heat sink under the cover, it will conflict with the motherboard. Even with offset mountings may experience compatibility problems with high components of the motherboard. But, theoretically, the CBO under the cover of the heat exchanger can be set.

Aerocool refused window, allowing to equip soundproof pads both side panels. Fastening of panels by two thumbscrews, and has a handle to facilitate removal. Location of the motherboard and the power supply is quite traditional. The same can be said about the rear fan next to the panel of the motherboard I / O. Due to the hull width in Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  can set a maximum of 120 mm fan. As we mentioned above, the housing is preset only one fan, which runs at a speed of between 600 and 1,800 rev / min. maximum speed for quiet housing is unusually high. But if the fan will run at low speed, then no problem.

Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  relies on the plastic unusual stand, which can be seen from the bottom four rubber feet. The power unit receives fresh air from the gap between the stand and the base body. You can also see and dust filter BP, which just goes back.

Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 | Interior

Both side panels Aerocool has supplied sound-insulating material, which prevents the spread of noise outside of the body.

The interior of the body in close, but it is quite modern. Aerocool has decided to completely abandon the storage rack, leaving space for long graphics cards and the front heat exchanger CBO. Furthermore, no positive impact on the rack air flow within the enclosure. The power supply and cables are hidden under the steel casing, which is secured by rivets. He, by the way, limiting the space for the front of the radiator, which should not exceed 7 cm in height.

Elsewhere Aerocool realized quite traditional solutions. Expansion cards are fastened by conventional cross head screws.

Cabling System is also quite simple. The motherboard tray, make a hole for cable using two different formats of the board, but without plugs.

For tray is hidden, and control electronics housing. The top board is responsible for the fan control. Connector (CN1) receives the PWM signal from the motherboard and transfers it to the fan controller. 4-pin a little farther (CN2) provides full-fan connection, the photograph is not connected. Accordingly, the body depends on the backlight PWM signal supplied. In total, there are three 4-pin and four 3-pin fan headers. A separate cable connects the top and bottom plate, connected to the latest LED-strip lighting system. Meals served on the board of one 4-pin Molex connector. If the PWM signal from the motherboard does not arrive, you can use a fee for the connection of additional system fans. But in this case, the backlight system will no longer depend on the PWM will be available only to manual mode.

The power supply is mounted on four rubber pads and is screwed to the rear panel. BP chamber length is 22.5 cm, so that it will be sufficient for most modern models, but should be considered, and a cable. Between the LED board and PSU bay is 3.5 “stand Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230. It is possible to install a 3.5” hard disk drives with the help of two simple plastic tray. Despite the Silent-profile, hard drive vibration isolation is not provided. The trays can also be set, and 2.5-inch drives, which are simply bolted to the ground.

But in case there are three additional mountings for 2.5-inch drives. One is for the tray, and two placed on the front of the drawer next to the motherboard. Behind the motherboard tray HDD / SSD is screwed to a removable mounting. But in the case of the motherboard segment 2.5 “drives have already bolted directly to the tray.

To test the system we installed in the motherboard SSD segment. Interior Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  benefits from the power supply housing segment, which hides unsightly cables. On the other hand, would not prevent the plug holes for wiring motherboard tray. The interior is spacious enough for Micro-ATX or ATX systems. When you install many components Aerocool body require a screwdriver. But if you do not want to frequently change the accessories, it is unlikely to worry on this occasion.

Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 | The test system, ventilation and tests

Of course, the body must not only be functional and easy to assemble. It should also provide efficient cooling.

Test configuration:

We used the following test configuration:

The main components of the test system

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-2400S
  • CPU Cooler: Scythe Yasya, passive
  • Motherboard: Biostar H77MU3
  • Operatives Memory: 4096 MB Crucial 1333 MHz
  • Drive: OCZ Arc 100 SSD 240 GB
  • Graphics card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 Ultimate
  • Operating System: Windows 7 x64 Home Premium

Temperature measurements:

For measurement of the maximum temperature of the CPU test, we used the free tool Prime95, which loads the system for 30 minutes. We chose the Small FFT load that maximizes heat dissipation, and then fixed the maximum core temperature using the system utility Lavalys Everest. We have combined temperature for the individual nuclei, and then divided them by the number of cores. At the same time we loaded the graphics card a demanding test Furmark.

Temperature evaluation mode in idle mode (single operation of the system) is not so interesting, because processors and graphics cards manufacturers have long implemented a very good power-saving mechanisms. For example, reduce the CPU core voltage and frequency in the event of inaction. Therefore, the heat generation components is significantly reduced.

Temperature Rating:

one 120 mm fan pre-installed in the body, so do not expect miracles. Indeed, the nominal cooling capacity but can be called sufficient. We conducted tests on the maximum speed of 1,800 rev / min. From measurements at a lower rotation speed had to be abandoned as a simple test motherboard was unable to cope with the management of the fan housing through PWM.

Evaluation of noise:

To measure the noise level, we used the Sound meter Voltcraft SL-400, which is located at a distance of 20 cm from the front of the housing.

With the minimum fan speed of 600 rev / min body should work quietly. At full speed Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  no longer meets the criteria for a quiet body, the noise level exceeds the point of 40 dB (A).

Other measures in the review:

We measured a maximum height of CPU cooler, and the maximum length of a video card with a tape, as well as the distance between the motherboard tray and the side panel. To measure the thickness of the walls we used a micrometer. We also take into account the data published by the manufacturer. Of course, at the same time we made a certain measurement error. For this reason, we recommend that you consider the values given below for comparison purposes only, and do not take them as the ultimate truth.

The height of the CPU cooler:

For cooler available 17.5 cm, so the Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  easily fit most of the coolers on the market.

Video length:

video length will be limited to the front fan or heat exchanger of NWO. The clean interior, you can set the video card of up to 41 cm. But even with the heat exchanger available space is more than 34 cm. It will be enough for all current high-end graphics cards.

Space for cabling:

Aerocool saved and available space for cable management. Between the motherboard tray and the side of the body is about 3 cm. But the mount for 2.5 “drive or motherboard fan headers substantially restrict the available space. Therefore, the cables have to be laid carefully.

The thickness of the material:

Case Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  is made of steel 0.8 mm thick.

Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 | conclusion

From the start line of Dead Silence was published in bright colors. But with the Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 body I have decided to go another way, which is advantageous for the company and users. Thanks to multi-color illumination Aerocool is no longer required to produce the body in different colors, and the user can easily change the color of the backlight by pressing the button. There is also a special PWM mode where the backlight is changed automatically depending on the speed of the fans – an interesting and useful addition. LED-strips are bright enough to attract attention, but at the same time they do not distract.

The illumination system fits well with the design of the case, especially in the plastic base. Without light Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 looks quite modest with a simple angled form. Interior left mixed impressions. Aerocool has chosen a modern structure without storage rack and cover the PSU segment. If five fixtures to drive you enough, then no problem. On the other hand, Aerocool not very attentive to detail. Expansion cards are fastened using simple screw holes for laying cables in the motherboard tray is not plugged. Even the vibration isolation hard drives available. Of course, the proponents of the quiet systems certainly prefer the SSD, but if the body is positioned as of Silent, you could add a simple rubber rings for isolation.

In general, the body Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  is not very well with the quiet theme. With a high maximum preset fan speed can be overcome. But the only pre-installed fan significantly reduces cooling efficiency. To cope with the heat load of the system, he has to work at high speeds, that does not quite fit into the concept of Silent. However, in case there are additional mountings for the fans, so this problem can be overcome. With the connection of additional fans will be no problems, because the controller board offers seven slots. If you optimize your body ventilation system for performance and low noise level, the Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  will begin to benefit from the optimizations for quiet operation, including from the soundproofing lining. Formally, the body can be determined and the CBO. But fixing the lid has a number of limitations. On the other hand, the front panel of the case can be set 280- or 360-mm coil.

For the price of Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230  can be purchased housing, optimized for water cooling. Here it can be mentioned the same housing E-ATX Phanteks Enthoo Pro (or variant M) or Fractal Design Define S. If you need a quiet housing for the air cooling, look for the same Fractal Design Define R5.

But if you need a quiet building with original lighting, the Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230 is considered. If you optimize the cooling system, we get a pretty quiet housing Midi Tower with an interesting design, for the most part, modern interiors and excellent illumination.

Benefits Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230:

  • Interesting multi-colored lights, and if you want to activate the PWM mode
  • Modern and spacious interior
  • Fee Distribution PWM fan with family connections
  • Up to six fixings for the fans, can be used for ITS with some limitations
  • Affordable and well-filled with the I / O panel

Disadvantages Aerocool Dead Silence DS 230:

  • In the standard configuration it requires a high speed from a single fan
  • Relatively few storage compartments
  • Without the help of a screwdriver you can install only 3.5 “drives, expansion cards and 2.5” drives are fastened with screws
  • No plugs in the cable management holes
