The range of Acer monitors is growing every year, but also to understand it is becoming increasingly difficult.
Hero of this review met the same fate. Acer R271 model of the new line R1 was introduced more than a year ago, appeared in Moscow stores about six months after that, as currently represented by only a couple of shops, but at a more affordable than before, price. But what this monitor is interesting and why should attract your attention? We will understand this in the course of acquaintance with the display.
Monitor Acer R271w mid (such is its full name in the white version) is based on the AH-IPS -matrix production LG Display, model LM270 WF5- RSA R9. This 8-bit (using the FRC-method) solution size of 27 inches with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels (Full HD standard), conventional W-LED-backlit without using SHIH-modulation and standard aspect ratio 16: 9.
Declared maximum brightness is 250 cd/m 2, a static contrast ratio of 1000: 1, 178-degree viewing angles in both planes, the response time measured by GtG procedure – 4 ms, that like should hint at the use of production AHVA-panel AUO, but in reality it is not so – it is applied, as we have seen, AH-IPS of LG Display.
The new panel is the LG, in all probability, was not created just for use in the “frameless” displays, and for installation in the most delicate solutions, which include the hero of today’s review. Most of the housing in its thickness similar to the flagship smartphone – less than 7 mm, including the now sold a record monitors. The lower part is expanded to a maximum of 35 mm, but it is made to accommodate the electronics trends. Menu design is simple and familiar to many other models of Acer. The only difference – the number of items in the menu sections, which in some models more, some less. In the case of Acer R271manufacturer shielded members from a dozen parameters that affect the color rendition, leaving only the main, there is still a couple of “make it.”
In the first section, you can adjust the brightness, contrast, color temperature, hue and saturation for six colors (the same – “to make it”), select one of predefined presets eColor, activate the filter “blue part of the spectrum» (Blue Light), which reduces the brightness and DH white point, and adjust the position of the image when using an analog D-Sub.
The second section, called the OSD, separated by a single point, is responsible for the time until the menu disappears from the monitor screen in the absence of user activity.
In Setting user can select a source, the degree of the panel acceleration (the OD) mode scaler image, menu language localization, to activate the dynamic contrast ratio, fast switching (deactivate deep sleep), automatic selection of the working interface and, of course, to reset all settings to the values on default.

All measurements described above were carried out before and after calibration. During the test, we measure the main monitor profiles: exhibited by default, sRGB (if available) and Adobe RGB (if available). Calibration is performed in the profile of the default, except for special cases, which will be discussed further. For monitors with extended color gamut sRGB, we choose the hardware emulation, if available. Before the start of the tests the monitor warms up for 3-4 hours, and all its settings are reset to factory defaults.
We will also continue our old practice of publishing the calibration profiles for monitors we tested at the end. In this test lab warns that such a profile can not 100% correct deficiencies specifically your monitor. The fact that all monitors (even within a single model) will necessarily differ from each other by small color errors. To produce two identical matrix is physically impossible, therefore, for any serious monitor calibration requires a colorimeter or spectrophotometer. The value of “contrast” has not changed because of the lack of influence on the gamma curves. Major changes occurred after dimming and edits the RGB values in the color temperature settings. The resulting range of the brightness is optimal for the job – it’s enough for most tasks in a variety of lighting conditions. Problems with the selection of the brightness of the user will not arise.
Color Monitor Acer R271 coverage is not surprising, and even a little disappointing (always want more). However, for this class result is absolutely normal.
With the factory settings, the CO news from Acer corresponds to 87.8% sRGB and AdobeRGB 64.3%. The means of getting rid of shades beyond the triangle, is the use of ICM / ICC-profiles and software with support for color management systems (CMS).
White point is set at a level above the average. Distinct spurious tones are absent, because discharge of gray wedge points on the Y axis is small: they all lie within the boundaries of a maximum tolerances DeltaE <10. The stability of the CG is at a high level.
Review Hero pleased with quality factory-set gamma curves that Acer monitors found more and more often. Specific changes are not required, but the result could have been even higher if the blue channel does not sink well below the reference curve in the area with light patches.
Despite the good gamma curves, due to non-standard sRGB color gamut monitor Acer R271 demonstrated in Argyll CMS test average of color accuracy. The average deviation of 2.5 units DeltaE94, maximum – 6.26. For the average user this is nothing to worry – the picture on the screen is very good, no obvious shortcomings, but for those who are planning to work with color, be sure to configure the monitor, profile, or even to carry out a full calibration.
Judging by the factory settings and the results obtained, R271 monitor required minimal manual adjustments.
After setting up and calibrating color display coverage for Argyll CMS data, increased to 91% sRGB and 66,5% AdobeRGB, however, will be difficult to notice an increase in the eye.

The average deviation from the center point of 9.3%, as close to 26%. The result is low – not the worst of what we’ve seen, but nonetheless. The nature of the deviations from the classic Acer R271 – darkened four corners and edges of some panels.
On the uniformity of the color temperature of the case The situation is somewhat better: between the measured minimum and maximum 571 kelvin, the average deviation from the center of 1.9%, the maximum – 5.3%. The upper part of the screen noticeably warmer than the central and lower. Unfortunately, this is clearly seen in real life. But it is possible that you can pick up a copy of a better.
Graph surface variations of color temperature, expressed in units of DeltaE, not only confirms the above-mentioned problems, but also talks about the new, hidden on the right side of our sample matrix. It was there that produced the maximum deviations (3.5-4.9) from the reference to 6500 K.
In general, the results for an affordable “frameless» IPS-type-monitor fairly typical. Problems with the uniformity of the black in roughly the same form as in our specimen, found almost every display of this kind. If you want better, you should choose among multiple instances. Unfortunately, this is often impossible. In such circumstances, we will have to get used to such features of modern IPS-type-model – well, or go to the * VA-options with the features as pleasant, and vice versa.To demonstrate the uniformity of the black box, we left two photos with different exposures. One of them can be seen that most strongly monitor lighten two right angle, and two left parasitic more pronounced color. The second photo shows a more close to reality image – the way it looks at the visual evaluation, when the user sits in front of the monitor. Such non-uniformity at a high brightness of the screen can be seen at work in a dark interface programs, even in the daytime, not to mention watching dark scenes in movies and games in the absence of ambient light. To reduce the visibility of stray light can only be by reducing the brightness of the backlight, but to get rid of them will not work.
Despite the use of 8-bit AH-IPS-matrix using dithering (FRC), Acer R271 monitor demonstrated with the default settings for the high quality of gradient fills. After manual edits the main operating parameters of the quality of tonal transitions is not impaired.
In the future calibration The performed with minimal revisions to the graphics card LUT influenced them greatly. There was some sharp transitions, no clearly visible spurious tones.
Hero review does not apply to the gaming models and different standard frequency of the vertical scan of 60 Hz. By default, the overclocking panel (OverDrive), but make it Acer failed quality engineers – on moving objects are well visible image artifacts.
