A few days ago, Acer introduced the updated laptops Acer Predator 17 and Acer Predator 15. Now in these models use graphics cards built on Pascal modern architecture, a mobile version which is almost fully compliant desktop chips. In our test lab enrolled Acer Predator 17 for the price of 2,300 euros, and before the site will be a full review of the new items, we decided to treat our readers first impressions.
The heart of the test laptop is the Intel Core i7-6700HQ Skylake generation processor with four cores and the ability to work with eight threads simultaneously. The base frequency of 2.6 GHz and Turbo mode, the processor can operate at a frequency up to 3.5 GHz. The processor can address 16 GB DDR4 memory frequency is not normal 2.133 MHz and 2.400 MHz overclocked to. Thus, the memory capacity is a little over 24 GB / s. However, for a gaming notebook the largest value still has a graphics card. Here Acer has installed NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with 8 GB of memory and 2,048 stream processors. Due to the restrictions on the TDP, a mobile chip runs only 10% slower than the desktop version. The first test showed the laptop itself is quite playable, particularly in the resolution Full HD. In Grand Theft Auto 5, the frame rate reached almost 70 FPS, and The Witcher 3 – as many as 120 frames per second. The Total War: Attila performance was not as high, but nevertheless, the frame rate was within a reasonable level and amounted to just under 50 FPS.
With daily tasks notebook will also handle fast thanks to the SSD capacity installed M.2 256 GB. Unfortunately, the manufacturer did not use the connection for the PCIe protocol and NVMe, despite that the average speed of the drive reaches almost 530 MB / s. For other programs, and, of course, games installed on the hard disk 1 TB, the rate of which is naturally lower, but still at an acceptable level of about 90 MB / s. In Cinebench 11 test, the productivity was 7.22 points. The 7-Zip compression test, we counted almost 19.000 MIPS.
From a performance standpoint Acer Predator 17 can be quite convincing, especially in the native resolution of Full HD. However, performance is not high for a gaming notebook of this class and this price, but then helps support NVIDIA G-Sync. LG production screen could be somewhat better. Its contrast and brightness up 1.031: 1 and 326 cd / m². The battery capacity of 6000 mAh is also a standard for gaming notebooks, but the declared three hours she was unable to provide. For more on this – in our detailed test.
It should be noted that during the test no problems nor temperature nor more than noise. On the surface it was impossible to distinguish between the hot areas in the noise level in the worst case was about 50 dB (A). Again, not unusual for such devices. But quiet notebook also can not be named.
The cost of the new Acer Predator 17 with a graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 is 2,300 euros. It’s not cheap, but for the money the manufacturer offers Frost Core technology, which can greatly improve the cooling performance of the processor and graphics card.
